Outstanding speed and resolution for the discerning photographer: The EOS 50D

Hi-res versions of product images can be downloaded from http://www.canon.co.uk/press_centre

Canon today strengthens its EOS range with the addition of a powerful new digital SLR: the EOS 50D. With a 15.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor, 6.3 frames per second shooting and Canon’s latest DIGIC 4 image processor, the EOS 50D delivers unparalleled speed and resolution at a price point that is unique in today’s market.

Outstanding, clean images
A newly designed 15.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor delivers ultra-detailed, low-noise images – ideal for large-scale reproduction or creative cropping. New manufacturing processes, plus redesigned photo diodes and microlenses, extend the light gathering capabilities of the sensor – allowing more pixels to be fitted on the CMOS sensor without compromising image quality. These changes ensure improved high ISO performance and low noise. High-speed, low light shooting is enabled by ISO levels of 3200, expandable to an ultra-sensitive 12800.

The EOS Integrated Cleaning System
– including the improved Self Cleaning Sensor Unit with a new fluorine coating – increases protection of image quality by helping to reduce, repel and remove unwanted dust from the sensor. Stubborn particles can be removed automatically in post-production with Dust Delete Data and Canon’s included Digital Photo Professional software.

Rapid-fire performance
Canon’s new DIGIC 4 processor is fast enough to allow up to 6.3fps continuous shooting, in bursts of up to 90 JPEGs with a UDMA card. Used with Canon’s wide area AF system, which locks onto subjects with 9 individual cross type sensors, stunning action sequences can be captured – even in low-light conditions. This makes the EOS 50D particularly suited to sports and wildlife shooting.

DIGIC 4 works with the CMOS sensor to deliver 14-bit image processing, for smooth gradation and natural-looking colours – as well as ensuring ultra-fast startup times and near-instant image review after shooting.

See everything
A new 3.0” Clear View VGA LCD provides extra-large and wide angle-of-view image review, with plenty of clarity for accurate focus checks in playback. By switching to Live View mode – which displays a real-time image on the LCD – photographers can enjoy simplified shooting from awkward angles, or connect to a PC for remote shooting. Live Mode now offers three ways to auto focus: Quick AF, Live AF, and new Face Detection Live AF, which optimizes focus based on faces detected in the frame – for fast, spontaneous portraiture.

Control and ease
The famously intuitive EOS menu system includes a new Quick Control screen, for instant access to the most commonly-changed settings. A new Creative Auto mode offers automatic focus and exposure – while still allowing creative ‘tweaks’ to settings such as background sharpness.

“For advanced amateurs and semi-professionals – or professionals looking for a powerful backup model – the EOS 50D stands alone,” said Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging, Europe. “No other camera in this price bracket offers a comparable combination of speed and image quality.”

those prices jsut made cringe!
now how to bribe the wife!?

Wow Marcel! Looks like you've done a deal with Canon to have special Talk Photography branded ones made! How cool is that :D. Put me down for one, I'll really look the part with one of those round my neck over my TP fleece  :p

Stops people nicking our bandwidth :p.....And if they do, we get free advertising. ;)

The price suggests its the 5d replacement, but then i realised thats RRP so take 20% or more off.

Yet again the camera marketting departments are fighting battles on pixel count. Its the quality of the pixels, not the number that counts. At this price point you'd expect buyers to be aware of that, but so many are fooled by the numbers. The high frame rate is useful for sports users. Be interesting to see what the actual retail prices are in a few weeks time.

isn't £1200 more like the price for a 5D, one hell of a jump from the current 40D value.

Warehouse Express are quick off the mark!!! Just got this email:

My guess is it'll actually retail for around the high £800's to low £900's

Let's hope the price of a 40D comes tumbling down !
I wouldn't expect the 50D to be on sale this year, - does anyone know when it's due ?

Keith.

End of September :)

i got that bag for £35 from my local store! im sure with that it wont stay at £1199 it will come down by chrimbo.

Prices seem to start from £1199.99.

Yeah that's RRP though, traditionally actual retail prices are considerably lower when they hit the shops :)

That's the Warehouse Express price, which is a shop (albeit an online one) and is usually cheaper than others.

The 40D has been exceptionally cheap for what it is. The xxD cameras used to be £1200 (my 10D was!)

Reports on Rob Galbraith of another 1 - 1.5 stops of high ISO performance make it sound good value. As for pricing, I reckon the new 5D will be nearer £2k (as the old one was at launch) to pitch it against the D700 and the 50D will stay at about £1k to pitch against the D300.

Reports from the US are that the 40D will continue at a reduced price for at least this year.

Why is the 50D RRP double that of the Nikon D90??

Is the 50D not the equivalent of the D90? And the 5D is the equivalent of the D300/D700?

I'm assuming that it takes CompactFlash cards? It doesn't say (or I couldn't find it anyway), but if warehouse express are bundling it with one then I suppose it's a reasonable assumption..... How come they're not changing it to SDHC cards like the 450D? Just wondering why the lower-end models changed to SD, but the xxD series won't?

What I'm trying to say is that presumably canon thought SD was better than CF, hence changing between the 400D and 450D, so why not for the 50D? Hope I made my point clear, but it's late and I'm tired!

Chris

Looks alreet, slightly better specs etc than the 40D, looks identical though which isn't a bad thing.

Price is a bit OTT though IMO.

because SD cards are nasty flimsy things but canon think that people ugrading from a compact may have some SD cards of reasonable capacity to use.

Ah right! I'm assuming that's not exactly the wording Canon used when they released the 450D?! I'm curious what they did say regarding the change, pretty much anything they said would surely be contradicted by bringing out a new model using CF still?!
