Hi guys

I borrowed Canon 500D for couple days to make a video.
Now playing with it and I found out how to make them but when i drag them into my laptop, they wont play, all i can hear is the sound but videos are frozen or wont play at all.
What i am doing wrong ?
I didnt download the 500D software, just put the SD card into my laptop to copied the videos into my laptoop.
With my other soapbox camera which also records .MOV videos i have no problems.

Thanks in advance

are the videos freezing in loads of moments ?

that's your computers fault. I think low RAM is responsible for this.

mind you the original video sizes are huge ! 400mb for a couple of minutes - easy !

Using Acer laptop here with 3gb RAM and over 40 gb free space on harddrive.
Reduced the quality on the camera and made only 30mb clip and still nothing ... Same trouble, theres voice but video frozen ...
And trying to watch them with VLC which should open nearly all video files ...

Do you have quicktime player installed? what happens if you try and view them with that?

as i understand it .mov is a 'container' file. The video inside (and the audio recording) it may use a different codec from the other mov file you have that plays fine.

I tried also quicktime, realplayer, media player and still nothing ... grrrrrrr

Try SMPLAYER

Thought to use Win Movie Maker later on to mix the vids together, so different players wont help me much here or ?
Tried also to drag the videos via cable into the laptop, also updated graphics card driver ... still nothing, im totally confused now ...

What processor is in your laptop? Could it be that it just isn't fast enough to play back video with such a high bit rate?

That laptop shouldn't have any problems with playing the video. Some kind of codec issue. Have you installed the latest software from Canon and does it play in Zoombrowser?

I recall I had a similar issue using VLC (and other programs) - and tried this tweak (which back then - I no longer use VLC) worked for me:

Open VLC, then select tools from the top menu.
Click preferences, then go to Input & Codecs.
(you may have to go into advanced mode)
In the “Input & Codecs Settings” window the last option should be “Skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding”.
Set this to “All”

I hope that works for you - there are lots of threads on the Internet on how to playback/edit Canon movies - in simple terms, it's more difficult / convoluted on a Windows PC, as the .MOV format is more suited to an Apple Mac environment being a Quicktime format.

Good luck.

Tried also SMPlayer. When WLC totally froze at the start but still played sound, SMPlayer showed me also the picture ... i mean when i skipped some part of the video, VLC still showed me nothing but SMPlayer showed me every phrame i pointed with the cursor, still not the running video ...

Is it a HD Movie? VLC does this on mine, sound plays fine but bo video feed. Just changed the camera setting to record Motion JPEG and all is sorted. I don't need HD on my laptop so it's fine with me.

I feel more and more dumb :P
Sry im asking but where did you changed that setting ? All i found was the recording size and pixles change options (large/medium/small), these ones didnt work for me :(

Cheers

At the bottom of the screen is a box to expand all the menus - Tick the radio button to "Show All" and then it will get even more complicated with more sub-menus -

- Input/ Codecs
- Other codecs
- Ffmpeg

Change the “Skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding” option to All. This option makes playback smoother by slightly degrading the quality of the picture.

But it might be easier all round to install the Canon Zoombrowser program ?

Just went to my friend place and tested in his laptop and everything was fine, even media player opened the videos, in my laptop no one program plays the videos ... Im out of ideas now ...

@ lostsoulal2
Thanks for that :)
Got it work but still the video is very "skippy" ... like over half of the video doesnt play propenly ... :(

At the end of the day i realized my laptop is crap for that ...
Used Turbo video converter and video runs smoothly now.

The only question now i have is how to record non HD videos with 500D ?

Cheers

Their are different video modes with smaller resolutions which will be easier to edit, but im not sure how much. Or convert all your footage, for my 7d it all goes to apple pro res to avoid laggy footage when editing. Not exactly sure about 500d, but could trz mpeg4 for windows.
