CANON 450D VS CANON 40D

can i add to this thread from a newbie perspective (hi all)...

this thread is ideally where i am right now, though moving up from a point and click to dslr. I was toying with the idea of buying a 1000D (shoot me down for maybe the wrong thinking)...but having checked out prices i am now in mixed minds about the 40 vs the 450 as per this thread.

I am seeking as much advice as possible re: purchasing, and this thread is giving me more food for thought.

advice so far has been to get the body that suits me right, then go for a decent lens above buying a bundle kit. Would any one agree with this as i can see the benefit of buying seperates, and the essential factor of getting the best picture into the camera in the first place.

If it meant saving a bt longer for the 4oD then i think i will, but am now being told about the imapct of exchange rates on the price of hardware so is it wise to put off til tomorrow when it maybe more expensive.

I liked the comment that the 40D has more features that will sit there until you become more familar and want to advance and discover them opposed to having to upgrade.

Have to say having had a 300d for a year now and only recently started using it in anger I now feel an need to upgrade, despite the fact the LCD is tiny in comparison to some newer units in the ***d range I have an issue with its size, it just doesn't feel right unless its used with a grip, its materials aren't up to the **d's I felt a bit like Jeremy Clarkson after handling the 40d tapping my 300d and think hmmmmm feels like its made out of Milk Tray boxes and string, well its not actually that bad but it does feel like an enthusiasts camera whilst the **d series feel like a workman's tool.

Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking the ***d series I still haven't bought the 40d and use my 300d foor the time being; if I had never picked up a 40d I probably woouldn't know what I was missing but having done so I know that its the right camera for me, I'll never get better than the level it can perform at and I'll be able to learn new features as I go :)

I'd outgrown the 400D, and, along with upgrading my lenses, wanted a camera I could continue to use for years to come.

The 450D is a cracking camera, but if you start to get serious about your photography, you'll hanker after something better before long.

i agree with richard, i currently have a 450D, but i find i want more that it can give, higher and better iso and faster FPS, my dilemma is weather to get glass or go for the 50D will get both but not sure which first as i know i will benifit either way :thinking:
 
Served my time with a 350D. Then moved onto a 400D & bought some glass along the way.

Both have been excellent cameras and I have had some great fun learning with them and they are both light and compact and great for carrying, especially when hill walking.

Found the limits of the 400D at the Tour de France in Paris last year. Frame rate was barely adequate. I looked at the 450D but it wasn't a great improvement and didn't want to move to SD.

Decided to go for the 50D after reading favourable reviews. It is heavy and not as compact as the 400D and initially I thought that I would keep the 400D purely for walking but the results from the 50D so far have been very pleasing, the clarity a vast step forward and the 400D has been sold. The build quality is obvious and the shutter sounds like it is a quality camera, I kid you not.

The 50D is a great camera. I don't think there is much between the 40D & the 50D, from what I read. After years of listening to "buy the lenses the body isn't as important" I am stunned at the difference between the entry level and semi-pro, but then I only know and appreciate this because I have learnt using the 350D & 400D first.

If you will use it go for the 40D. If you are not yet sure about the investment then go for the 450D, try it, learn from it and upgrade in the future if you choose to.
 
Bought a 450D 6 weeks ago... got addicted and bought £3k worth of glass.... now bought a 50D and loving it!

The only annoyance for me is that I learnt all the function positions on the 450D, and now have to relearn them all for the 50D.

Are the 50D images sharper? Maybe a little, but it's barely noticeable. Does it "feel" better? Yes, definately. The biggest upside for me is the greater ISO range and the extra wheel on the back allowing Manual adjustments to be less like yoga for the hands.

Id get some fast glass as from your sig you dont have any low light shooting lenses and the glass would benifit you instantly where as the body would be good but not as useful as the glass.
 
I've moved from a 400d to a 40d and there are so many things that make the 40d a no brainer: larger viewfinder, far better handling (especially with more substantial lenses), brilliant thumb wheel, higher FPS, higer ISO, etc. Don't get me wrong, the 400d/450d will still take excellent pictures, but for the sake of £145 (£585 v £440 - WHE) now, you will save in the future when you want to upgrade - and you can then invest this money in better lenses.
