A mate of mine has a 450D like me but he said he fancies the Canon 1100D. Would that be a nice upgrade? I told him i didn't think it would be but he likes the higher ISO and some other features.

Would a 40D or a 50D be a better bet?

I told him to go for a Nikon D90 but he is a through and through Canon chap!! :D

I've got a 450d too - I'm looking to upgrade soon, but I'd aim a little higher than that, unless funds are too tight... the 40 or 50 would be a better step up I would imagine.

Apart from HD vid, you wouldn't be gaining that much with a 1100d?

I wouldnt view that as a upgrade imo.

I believe (and could well be wrong) but the 1100D replaces the 450D as the starter dslr.

I'm looking for one as well atm (a dslr that is lol)

how is 1100D an upgrade to 450D? 1***D are cheaper/ligher/crappier entry elevel models. Upgrade to 450D in the same family is 500D/550D/600D.

40D/50D - are one step up - semipro bodies made of magnesium alloy, water resistent, pro-style controls, etc...

As others have said, that would be more of a side-grade than an upgrade. An upgrade from the 450D would be to something like the 40D or upwards. I recently upgraded from a 450D to a 7D myself, and am really happy with the change.

I would say get some nice glass for the 450D before upgrading as he will see more of an improvement than a body change.

As already said, not really an upgrade as i can see, unless he wanted the video facility.

Thats what i though guys. I will get him to read your posts tomorrow when i see him.

He loves canon so i guess a 40D or a 50D would be a big improvement over the 450D? Or even a 500D?

What do you think guys?

The 1100D has some better features than the 450D including higher ISO which my mate requires.

We've already said!

xxd is an upgrade, 1100d isn't.

It only seems that way as it is a few years newer. If he just wants swanky features he should look at the range of EVIL cameras as it doesn't seem he looks past the features?

Just a guess!

Edit - high iso is a bonus but it still wouldn't make an "upgrade". I'd look at a 60d (or 40/50d) or the 600d.

The 450D was released 3 months earlier than the 1000D
the 450D has had a few replacements in its level of the canon DSLR range 500D 550D and 600D
The 1000D was only receintly replaced with the 1100D

The XXXD range is higher up the scale than the XXXXD range so is it an upgrade? not really its a step back down the range, newer cameras have higher ISO capabilities and as far as I can see that is the only advantage the 1100D has over the 450D up to 6400ISO but everything else is pretty much the same other than loosing spot meetring on the 1000 and 1100D.

If he wants an upgrade he needs to buy a new one on the same level 550D or 600D or go up a level to the 50D or 60D. but the prices are quite a lot more.

The 500D allows higher ISO options but they aren't too great I think the 450D performs better than the 500D at ISO 800. I personally wouldnt buy a 500D as an upgrade from a 450D as it isnt that much better the screen is miles better but thats the biggest improvemnt and yes its 15.1mp over 12.1mp but thats not really worth upgrading for especially when he will spend over £450 on a 500D.

Ok, great advice. I will tell him. Looks like a 40D might be the best to go for as i think a 50D is beyond his budget.

What can he expect to pay for a 40D body? And it is a good upgrade to a 450D?

Probably not worth upgrading to the 40D it sounds like someone has about £400 and wants to spend it on a new camera unfortunatly to go up a level he has to buy an older camera the 40D was released 6 month before the 450D.

Tell him to save up and buy a new camera either the 600D or the 60D the 60D would be the better option butits £600 or £800 for those 2.

I think buying anything else would be a waste of money really.

Better ask him to bullet-point features he misses with 450D and then go from there. Upgrading simply for upgrading makes no sense.

I think the main reason he wants to change is the ISO is low on the 450D? Don't understand it myself. Told him to join the forum and ask some questions himself.

ISO 1600 is more then enough, better buy some fast lenses if you need fast shuuter speed. You'll get to much of noise with ISO 3200, even with 50D/60D.

You might be able to pick up a second hand 5D....but this is ful frame so a new lens would be needed. (50mm 1.8 cheap and works). The 5D will have great high ISO...50D, 60D second hand could be another option... All depends if he wants brand-new kit.

I ended up going from the 450D to 7D, the 5D mk2 was just way to much as I had to also by a new lens :-(

If he needs higher ISO then I agree with the post above - he needs some faster lenses to get more light into the camera.

So, nothing to do with ISO. Just needs faster lenses?
