I had the opportunity today to look at a work colleagues Olympus 510e. When turning it off it had a noticeable vibration when the sensor cleaner was activated. My 450D also cleans the sensor on start and when switched off, but I don't feel or hear anything, the only indication I get is the icon display in the LCD. Is this correct?

Also, on my Panasonic DMC-FZ8 the Image Stabilization is quite noticeable, I could see the ‘damping’ of the movement if I were to move the camera around, however, on the 450D I can't tell any difference with the switch on of off, should I?

I have no reason to suspect either is not performing as it should. I just wondered if another 450 owner could confirm if this is the same on theirs.

Thanks.

In answer to qu #1, I dont experience any vibration when sensor cleaning and tbh would be more than a little worried if i did!

Steve, My 450d reports the sensor is being cleaned, but I've never noticed any vibration either. As for the IS, I guess it depends if it turns on. On the kit lens 18-55, to the best of my knowledge, I've never had it activate therefore I've not seen any effect. On my 55-250, it kicks in quite a bit, especially out at the long end, and then, the IS is noticeable.

OK, thats good then. Thanks for the fast reply guys. :)

On a wide angle lens you don't notice it, but that doesn't mean the IS isn't running. With the 17-55 f/2.8 IS, I can shoot handheld down to 1/3rd of a second, and there's no way I could do that without IS.

Try it and see. Set up a shot at f=18mm that requires a shutter speed of around 1/3rd or 1/6th, take it handheld with IS on and off, and look at the two images at a high magnification. You'll see the effect of the IS there even if you can't see it at the time you press the button.

Ah, could be Stewart... I don't believe I've used it in conditions that either I would have a chance to notice it (not using the viewfinder once lined up), or the lighting is sufficient that it wasn't needed. I've had it activate on me a couple of times, cos I forgot to turn it off when I had the camera tripod mounted doing long exposures... That mucks up the image nicely :D

On the subject of canon 450D's, I am wanting to start photography as well and can not decide between a Canon 450D and a Nikon D90.........

It would be appreciated if the boffs could assist with their opinions.

Thanks.

I *think* the cleaning the 450D does is ultrasonic. Maybe the olympus uses vibration to clean the sensor ?

It's not something i've listened out for on my 40D, but on my 400D you could hear a slighty tick, at a fast pace, when it was cleaning the sensor. No vibration though.
