canon 450d 'No card'

Last few days my 450d has been saying no card in the camera, when there is. occasionally, after playing with it for a while, it will work, but it is really starting to get frustrating. Any ideas?
 
Have you tried more than one memory card? I had this issue on my 450d last week and when looking at the memory card I noticed a tiny bit of the plastic casing had snapped off. Computer reads the card fine but the 450d just says no card. Have ordered a new card to replace it.
 
Is there any way of having a look in the slot to see if there is any debris in there. Failing that it looks like it could be a trip to Canon for inspection and repair.
