Canon 450D Kit £264, Nikon D300 £549

I have a feeling that there will be 5 D300’s on ebay after today, and another 5 on Sunday..... I’m hoping the D300’s go on ebay so I can link them to the camera’s.

Pray tell, how will you know if the cameras came from Jessops and what price the seller paid?

I guess I’ll have to save up the rest for a D300 and I wont be buying it from Jessops thats for sure.

Good for you, that'll show them

Agreed. Be interesting to hear how you got on. I am also popping back at lunch to try out a best offer on the D300, or see if they can do anything. highly unlikely but you never know...
I very much doubt I will get a response, and I’ll only e-mail them if 5 D300’s come up on ebay today. Let me know if they do anything for a best offer.

Well considering there are only 16 Nikon D300’s for sale on ebay at the moment I think it will be pretty obvious is 5 more go up today. I’ll send a few questions to work out if its from jessops or not.

It might not bother jessops that I’m spending my money elsewhere but if there are others with the same intensions as mine then it will affect them. I’ll be spending my money with my local camera store instead.

So......if you can get one for £549 then all is right with the world and you'll be happy, but if not then Jessops are a terrible company who don't look after their customers, is that about right?

It’s nothing to do with if ‘I’ got one or not. Yeah I’d be happy, who wouldn’t. I’m not saying jessops are a terrible company either. I just don’t like how companies turn their backs against their long term loyal customers.

It’s the same with companies like Sky, or Virgin Media, new customers pretty much always get better deals than that of existing customers.

Like I say, I doubt I’ll even get a response from jessops but for so many years of my life I’ve kept quiet about things that have bugged me so I’m gonna voice my opinions on this.

For instance the ticket touts that buy tickets for football match’s concerts etc, I have no interest in those tickets for myself but it still bugs me that the honest fans are the ones that get ripped off.

I don’t want to get into an argument or anything like that.

lol, this thread is full of tantrums.

Grow up guys!

It's not Jessops' fault  how could they possibly stop people buying the camera if they aren't actually into photography?
It's the most absurd thing, and I would be very much surprised if your letter gets anything but shredded.

so, did anyone from here actually pick one up?

..ive signed off this forum, doesnt appear to be a discussion from some parts. Clearly those who have more money than others and overly happy buying their kit from currys digital et al.

How are Jessops doing that? All they are doing is having a promotion to drum up foot traffic for their new store, it's not the same thing as Sky or Virgin Media giving better deals to new customers.

There's nothing to stop you, or any other "loyal customer" going down and standing in the queue.

Fwiw, Jessops occasionally do offer deals to "loyal customers", but you need to sign up for their email notification to get details.

At the end of the day, Dal it's like everything else in life, if you want it then you need to go out and get it yourself, if there's a queue then you need to stand in it, if it means getting up at 5am, then so be it....

Sorry mate but what did you expect me to think?!

I don't have more money than others, I saved up and managed to get the 40d at a superb price because it had £100 cashback, plus staff discount from Jessops. I work there part time and I could be earning £2 extra an hour sat on a till in marks.

You were unlucky in getting a D300, but then you didn't put much effort into it!
"I got up a bit earlier"

Surely you'd have known it would be an avalanche trying to get one!

I just think it's 1) pointless and 2) immature to stamp your feet because you didn't get a camera. Jessops made an offer that was completely fair and completely equal to EVERYONE, and there was no way for them to differentiate between enthusiasts and people just looking for profit. Even then, should they differentiate between enthusiasts and pros?

It's a lost cause, and even before the cause was lost it wasn't particularly based firmly in reality or rational thought imo.

Oh yeah and Dal, looking at the kit you own, it doesn't appear that you've spent huge amounts of money in Jessops recently, so even if they were to make an offer available to "loyal customers" only I would imagine your total spend would fall a bit short of qualifying ;)

I've just been reading my replies and I'm going to apologise for my messages. I've made a fool out of myself yet again.

Sorry.

I left the front of the queue to the bun fight. I hope the staff actually came out and gave out a ticket to the guys in the front of the queue just for fairness, if that makes sense.

They'll have this sort of thing well organised. Several years ago PC World opened a new store in our town and had a bunch of super offers on the opening day. I went down there at 04:00 and there was a guy with a clipboard taking names in order of arrival. He told me that the lappy I was after was still available and that I had to be back in the queue by 07:00. At that time all the people on the list were led to the front of the queue, in the correct order, to wait out the last couple of hours.

... I got emailed this offer by Jessops as on the mailing list, and so got up slightly earlier than normal to go in on the way to work. I was at the store by 5.30am. there were at least 30 people already there.
That's not as bad as I'd have expected, to be honest. There were no less than 4 dSLRs available at half price this morning, so at least the first 20 people in the queue would've been happy.

5 are available tomorrow morning, so from your observations one might well be lucky were one to arrive at midnight or so with a folding chair / sleeping bag / thermos / &c.

Depends what your time is worth really, but I find that quite encouraging. If you were a youngster, living in London, who was saving for a (first) dSLR on a minimum wage job then the savings of being there early would certainly be worthwhile.

Wow, what a steal! If I was able to get to London this weekend I'd be there at closing time the day before! :o Just a shame I'm not in the country :(

Sorry.

It takes a big man to apologise

i think we should all boycott jessops until they realise that us genuine customers spend a fortune there and that special offer should only apply to people who have spent £500 or more on a jessops product with the receipt and that way us photographers who use jessops will be happy because of the benefits and then they will get more sales from us because we will like them more.

As we should do but don't with the likes of Sky, insurers, mobile/ land-line/broadband providers, banks et al, they all seem to believe that the way ahead for them is to offer 'new' customers much better deals than their existing user base. Fortunately for them the majority of customers either don't like change, like the 'security' of a household name or simply can't be @rsed/bothered to challenge their renewal.

But one of the main points in business is to attract new customers, the regular customers are "regular customers" in which case they already have their custom. These offers are intended to attract new customers as well as drum up custom for a new store.
And to be honest, their offer is actually the fairest way of doing it, everybody has the option of going to queue up so there's really no arguement. Some people will get a bargain, which is better than nobody getting one. It's a slippery slope once people start begrudging other peoples' good fortune....

Well, I agree with those who say that it works for publicity and attracts new customers, however I doubt very much that majority of those will go back to Jessops unless there is another crazy bargain up for grabs so we can't really talk on any goodwill generating can we? And yes , I believe that majority of those cameras will end up on ebay. The best way of doing such promotion in my opinion would be to sell a body say 40D for more sensible price £ 450 IF bought together with some pricey lens and sell 10 instead of 5 cameras. By doing so Jessops won't attract some easy profit seekers and those photography enthusiasts who are struggling for cash at the moment will benefit more and probably will do some business with them again in the future.

i also pee'd off as i spent £550 on a sony a300 at christmas and i could of took a train into london i also have free bus travel then i could have bought a 40D and still have loads of cash to spare. theres no turning back and anyways how should i know at christmas that in 4 months time there will be cheap cameras at the new store opening.

I'm amazed at the can of worms opended up here which was found in pandoras box and then thrown at a hornets nest!!!:naughty:

anyone manage to get any for half price? cos i went on saturday at 10am and a few people were waiting for shop to open on sunday :)

Just read the first post, scrambled for my credit card and then realised it was a stunt.... can you imagine if suddenly D300 went for that price across the UK? here would be some seriously well-kitted out toggers. Oh well, back to giving the Nikon 12-24mm some serious consideration... I don't need a new body anyway..... :(

Good marketing on Jessops' part - as effective as anything Iv'e seen recently.

Well, it's entertained me so "thanks Jessops" :)

Why it's Jessops' fault that someone didn't get up quite early enough to bag a bragain I have no idea. Some people got a bargain, maybe they weren't keen photographers but maybe they were.

Frankly, who cares?

Should I object that they opened the store in London, damned inconvenient for me. By Jimeny they should reduce cameras near to me too, just to be fair!! :D

I'm laughing so hard I can hardly type.

Oh my sides.

I didn't expect it to be quite that bad. How many were waiting? If you'd joined the queue then, would you have got one?

Stroller.

I'm on the Jessops mailing list and I didn't get an e-mail about this offer, this is the first I've heard of it. I was down in London this weekend as well so I could have taken advantage of it if I'd have known in advance.

It's a shame Preston already has 2 stores open. No point crossing my fingers and hoping they go for a grand opening of a 3rd store with D700's on offer at 90% off!

I thought that Jessops were feeling the pinch?, I'm surprised at any new store openings...

I would imagine that they were too far on with preparations to shelve the plans when the brown stuff started hitting the fan. The plans to become a Canon-only retailer seem to have been quietly dropped though.....

Recession or no recession, surely a plan to become Canon only would have been mad. I'm not saying this just because I am a Nikon user.

By your average Joe Public snapper, Jessops is seen as the place to go to buy your camera gear on the high street and your average Joe Public snapper wants a choice in what he buys. Without being offered that choice they'll go elsewhere. I appreciate that companies have to concentrate on the products that sell the best or have the highest margin but going Canon only would have been suicide for Jessops.

I think Canon were to be putting money into Jessops for this to happen, so it may well have been a last resort for them in the face of going down the tubes.

They've probably shut 7 and opened 1 thus saving oodles of cash

Is it me? Am I missing something here? :bonk:
Surely if you knew about the offer and wanted a bargain, you get your ass out of bed and go and queue at daft o'clock outside the store and put yourself out!!

You dont get owt for nowt in this life !
