Hi all, I'm new here and I'm really after some guidance if at all possible!!

I have seen the Canon 450D body on Purelygadgets for £339.99. This price does not include the £50 cashback. So the final price would be £289.99.

I was considering going with the 450D and 18-55 IS kit lens but after quite alot of thinking I have decided the Sigma 17-70 would probably be a better option. I could pick this up for about £200.

That brings the final cost of camera and Sigma lens to about £490 which I personally thought was a bargain price.

I would however like some advice regarding the lens. Firstly, has anyone ordered anything from Purelygadgets??
Should I stick with the Canon 18-55 or 'upgrade' to the Sigma 17-70??
Also, what does everyone think of the 450D??

All help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Stuart

Welcome to TP, Stuart.

Purely Gadgets are believed to be "grey" importers. That's not such a big deal if you're buying a Canon lens from them, because Canon lenses have worldwide warranties. However, Canon DSLRs only have country-specific warranties and a "grey" import might not be covered. In that case you would be relying on the retailer's warranty, ie for the retailer to take responsibilty for any problems.

The situation with Sigma lenses is similar. There have been cases reported of Sigma UK requring evidence that UK duty and VAT have been paid on a lens before they will carry out work under warranty, so a lens bought from PG might not be covered. Again you would be relying on the retailer's warranty.

I have limited knowledge of dSLR's having only used the 450d, but I love mine. The Kit Lens is pretty good and works well for me, although I use it a lot less than my 55-250. I just wish the two had a bit of overlap.

Thanks Stewart. Are 7dayshop "grey" importers too?? Unfortunately I don't have too much knowledge about this subject but you have made it clearer to me.

jsg001, thanks for the input. The choice of lens is causing me the most problems at the moment. I have also been looking at the 55-250 as a future purchase.

I don't know for certain. I've never bought anything from them.

However their website says this:
If your goods become faulty after delivery we strongly recommend that you contact the manufacturer directly for a warranty repair/replacement. This is often the most efficient way for your fault to be resolved.

... which suggests to me that they're probably not grey. However somebody who has purchased from them should be able to give a more definitive answer.
