Hi chaps - I've seen a 430 EX - I guess it's vers I as the name on the unit doesn't have an II next to it - it comes with a Honl 1/8 Speed Grid and is about £130 - is that a good price or should I hold out for a Mark II is there a lot of difference ? - will it work as remote with my 580 EX II ? - many thanks for helping me out.

Roger

The 430EX has a 20% slower recycling time compared to the 430EXII and only 6 custom functions compared to 9 on the EXII. Otherwise the mkI and mkII are pretty much the same.

£130 is at the high end of the second-hand pricing, you should be able to pick one up for nearer £100.

Yes, it can act as a slave to your 580EXII.

I just picked one up from the classifieds here. £105 all in and it came with a Sto Fen diffuser and the flash looked un-used - mint condition. You could get one for a better price I think.

Haven't used the flash all that much yet, but it seems great.

Thanks both ... I'll probably wait for a better deal but I think the Mk I is, from what you say Darren, probably enough for my needs.

Well I have one myself and it's been absolutely fine for my uses :)

Before you get the 430EX-I, check whether it is compatible with your preferred radio triggers. That is of course, if you are interested in using it off camera as well without slaving it via the 580EXII.

It works fine with RF-603s.
