Can anyone help with info on whether this is any good...the 430 reviews well...but there is not much on the web about this model...but it is cheaper...

Canon 420EX

I just bought a 50d a few weeks ago and am thinking that I would want a flash that would work auto for single flash...and maybe be able to be used with off camera flashes like FITP type...

I would think about a flexible gary fong that could be kept for single work...and FITP softbox etc for other...but not all right away...

If there are any other options that anyone knows of...advice more than welcome...

420ex has no manual adjustment only ttl, so its good on camera (not great as it doesn't swivel) but no good for strobisty playing

420EX has no manual power control, but it swivels and tilts and is fully E-TTL compatible on or off camera (as a slave).

You can do anything with it within the confines of E-TTL auto, but without any manual override the E-TTL enabled 420EX would have to work independently of the radio triggered manual remote flashes (with RF-602 plugged in to the co-ax socket).

If that sounds confusing, it is. You could make it all work, but very far from ideal.

Iirc you can't disable the sleep function on the 420ex which kicks in after something like a minute, the PT-04 definitely doesn't wake it again, the RF-602 might, but I wouldn't bank on it...
