A while back I listed my kit and someone suggested ditching my 50mm f/1.8 II lens and opting for the STM version.

But as I've got a crop sensor, I wondered if maybe the 40 mm (even though it's 2.8) might be better.

I’ve heard good things about the latest STM 50mm in terms of bang for buck, but not read any reviews about the 40mm or even the 24m (aware that this is an EF-S lens).

Thoughts?

Different lenses with different strengths, both good.

The 50/1.8 STM is a) 1.8, and b) cheap, especially for a 1.8 lens. The 40mm is tiny, will fit in your manbag.

Interesting thread. I too have the 50mm 1.8 mark II not sure why someone would suggest ditching it for a newer version. I really like my 50mm and just had a look at the stm version. In my world there didn't seem enough if any difference to my eyes, that would make me change.
I really like mine for the size so I'm sure I would get along with the 40mm.

I've had two copies of the 50/1.8 Mkii. The first had hopelessly inaccurate and inconsistent focusing so got rid of that. A year or so later, I convinced myself it couldn't have been that bad so got another one. It was just as bad, cheap and nasty crap TBH.

Then the STM version appeared. It's way better built, sharper (I know they're supposed to be the same optically) and focuses very well. Great lens

iv'e had both
the 50mm 1.8 is in reality just a cheap lens and an easy cheap way of getting something with an aperture less than f2.8 but at 1.8 i found it wasn't that sharp and was stopping it down to f2.8 to make it useful anyway
mines still in one piece but iv'e heard quite a few stories about them literally falling in half

the 40mm f2.8 stm on the other hand is sharp wide open and reasonably well made
it's a tiny thing of a lens and looks a bit odd on a 1 series body but i love the thing, it almost seconds as a body cap :)

i also have the 50mm f1.4 which would be my choice today if i was going to buy a 50mm ( ish ) lens
out of the other 2 i would go for the 40mm f2.8 i just prefer that over the 50mm f1.8

I must have been well lucky with mine then. Not got the 24 mm but do have the 28mm F1.8 that is a great lens too. Built very well but costs more.
