Just muddying the waters here but does the 7d have the same sensor as the 50d? It has a pretty similar pixel count on the same sized sensor but I don't hear many complaints about noise on the 7d.
It's a newer tech 18mp sensor compared to the older 15mp on the 50D, with new technology and better ISO performance despite having a greater pixel density.
