i was looking at getting a 50d ut i don't think o can afford it. is there a big difference between the 40 and 50d? will the 40d allow me to capture great images?
also are there any other cameras similar to the 40d at a similar price? thanks

Still use mine and don't really class it as a back up to my 5D, more of a different tool to use. High iso noise is the only small gripe i have but then it's 5D time. Put some good glass on the front and it's a great camera.

If you can take a great photograph, then a 40D will certainly manage to capture it on your behalf.

I'd rather have a 40D than a 50D

I bought a 5000 click 40D for £350 last week.
Another 40D sold for £350 on here today.

At that price they are a real bargain.
IMHO no need to pay £480-520 for a 50D (although those prices will drop now the Canon 60D has been announced).

The only thing I want from 50D in my 40D is AF microadjustment feature. There is nothing else extra valuable to me in it.

If find 40D superb for my macros hence still keep it.

I fairly recently went from a 400D to a 40D after considering a 50 or even pushing the boat out to a 7. I'm very happy with mine. Good improvement over the 400 and great value for money.

You cany go far wrong with a 40D - great solid camera and can be had for reasonable money.

Must of had mine for a couple of years now (got it when first launched) and it's fantastic.
As others have said, there isn't a massive difference with the 50D.
Why not go for the 40D and invest / save the difference in good quality glass?

I am in exactly the same position. I read nothing but good things about the 40D but worry a little about buying second hand as opposed to a new 50D with warranty and no use.

I felt much the same but then happened across a second hand 40D in Jacobs in Central London. I paid a little more than they can sometimes be had (£400) but felt the security of getting it from a "proper" shop - with a year's warranty - was worth it.

Learning the art of photogrpahy will get you great images, pretty much regardless of what DSLR you use.....I've got great pics from my Canon 350D (body worth £120). I'm on a 40D now and its a nice camera to use, I'd always buy used rather than new as you get more for your money and don't lose much when you want to sell it on to upgrade again.

40D is a great camera, spend the change/future money on decent glass as this makes a bigger difference, you must match the body with suitable quality glass. I've heard the 50D is only real better in terms of MP - but if you're not shooting huge posters then I doubt its worth it.

The 50D is a great camera I have use two of them and not had any problems with noise or any other things with the cameras they are built well and are great in your hand.
As I have now moved on to a 7D I am selling them see link below in sig.

Higher resolution
Matching if not better ISO performance (due to gapless micro-lenses and the higher resolution making potential noise artefacts smaller)
Newer DIGI4 Processor
Matching FPS - but the 50D is doing this at 50% higher resolution and is UDMA compatible allowing for large bursts
Upgraded 3" 920K LCD monitor (meant to be one of the best in its class apparently)
Peripheral illumination correction
Live View (with Contrast-based autofocus)
AF micro-adjustment
Improved the AF algorithm on the 50D

I reckon there's quite a few respectable upgrades to make it a worthwhile choice. Did I mention I'll be selling mine soon? :naughty:

I had a 50D - the most disappointing camera i have ever had the misfortune to own, stick with a 40D.

Go for the 40D, I have one as well as a 5D. It is a superb camera.

I wouldn't change it for a 50D nor will I be changing it when the soon to be released 60D comes on the market.

In my opinion the 40D is the best cropped sensor camera on the market.

It usually helps if you say why.

I just didn't like the images it produced , they always appeared noisy at low iso's especially the OOF areas and the images just lacked something - It is the *only* body i have ever owned (Nikon or Canon) that made me lose the desire to take photos.

40d it's a verry good camera, i will stick with mine cannot find any fault.
just get good glass and you will not get better tool for the money.

Keep wondering whether I should get another one as a spare, mine is knocking on 70k clicks and can't last forever

There again do they work better when used regularly, know some have had shutter problems and wonder if its because they sit idle for long periods

It's a bit like a car. Use it too much, it'll break quicker. Use it too little, it'll break quicker. Regular, non-extreme use and it'll do as well as it can.

That does sound quite unusual, I've not experienced this problem even with the kit lens. Maybe it was just a bad one?

Here's one I shot a few weeks ago, looks fine to me. There's an original link also (7MB) so you can get close in. Shot as JPEG out of the camera.

I had a 40d. Got a 50d, was disappointed with the noise and the pics in general, sold it and bought another 40d!

I recently went the same way.

Got a used 40D for £370, 7000ish shutter actuations, mint condition.
Absolutely superb for that money!

I recently went from a 400 to a 40 it's great for sports everything about it is quicker, af speed, burst rate, buffer, and it's not silly megapixels so dosen't slow my PC down

40D all the way for me. IQ is much better than the 50D. More pixels yeah, but the detail in each one isn't as good as the 10mp 40D.

40D vote here, great cam and I would pick it over the 50D every time.

I'm thinking that 10-12mp is about right on a crop sensor, seems to give the right amount of detail especially in backgrounds at smaller apertures

Noticed objects like trees look good on a mega pixel camera when viewed at small size, but if enlarged seem to lack the fine detail

Anyway just purchased another 40D to go with my somewhat well used one, not that keen on a 50D and very underwhelmed by the new 60D (was hoping they would reduce the pixel count rather than go bigger)

Agree really happy with my 40D, brilliant
I will be getting a second one when I can afford it as mine has taken 60K + shots but it has not missed a beat

I'd be quite interested to see some examples of this noise as I can't see any in my shots?

After reading this thread, how pleased am I that I got a 40D a couple of weeks ago !
Went into the shop intent on a 50D but had a reality check when I realised the 40 did everything I wanted and the spare cash will go towards good lenses.

I'd rather have a 40D than a 50D

Indeed - much as I'd like some of the additional features of the 50D, I'm not prepared to put up with the inferior noise and so hang on to my 40D :)
