I have my Canon 40D with the Canon 50mm 1.4 lens on it and when i use live view i cant get it to Auto Focus what the problem?

Is it like the 450D, do you have to use the buttons on the back to focus when in live view mode?

So I guess we can only focus Manually then?

read page 114 of the manual

basically set C.FN III-6 to Enabled, then you can use the AF-on button to focus - it temprarily disables live view, focuses and switches it back on again

You can set a custom function for the AF button. It drops the mirror and focuses then lifts it again. I use it a lot for macro stuff.

You mean i can set one of the C1 , C2 , C3 to have it how i want for the liveview

Cheers now all sorted... Got C1 all set up for my macro Photography

You can set the camera so when in liveview if you hold down AF button it will drop the mirror and focus. When you release the AF button it will return to liveview (in focus).

just reading this, i always wondered why it wouldnt AF :) Thanks guys, big help to me :)
