Hi, i was looking ast getting a 50D but i've been offered quite a reasonable deal for a 40D with a good telephoto lens. I would kike to know what the pro's or cons are of a 40d against a 50d or whether the 50d is worth that bit extra.

I had the 40D and loved it (now have a 5DII). My mate sold it to me when he upgraded to the 50D and he regretted it for some reason. Sure the 50D has an extra 5mp resolution but I think there were a lot of people who felt the same way. Do a search and I'm sure something will pop up.

So, not a reason to not go for the 50D...but if the 40D represents a significant saving over the 50D, then go for that. It is considered a bit of a classic. Sorry I can't be any more helpful.

I have a friend who went from a 40D to 50D (and now a 7D)

He liked th 50D mainly becuse of;
#1 more MP gives a bit more leway when cropping.
#2 He liked the larger screen as it is easier to see (especially in bright light).

I shoot with a 40D and 5D

There are at least two other factors worth considering.

1 - Better handling of noise at high ISO's

2 - Micro focus adjustment

I've never looked into the detail but i'm sure when the 50d was released most saw it as a step backwards ISO wise.

hi Guys, just seen a 650d + kit lens for £400 is this a good price and how does it compare to 40d/50d

Newer higher res, cheaper smaller. The ergonomics of the xxxd cameras are a different world to the xxd cameras.

The 50D was seen as a step back with regards to noise handling manly due to the larger pixel count.

The only positive I see with the 50D would be the micro focus adjustment which the 40D doesn't have.

The 40D has a magnesium alloy body where the 600D will be smaller and have a plastic body.

I upgraded from a 40D to A 50D as i was offered it a a bargain price. The main difference was better noise handling. The 40D would be ok up to 800iso whereas the 50D is good to 1600.
It's also got a newer processor.

I was using both a 40D and a 50D together, and it was always the 50D I reached for first.

I suspect many people were disappointed that it wasn't a huge increase over the 40D, maybe canon should have called it a 45D instead of the 50D.

I still shoot with my 40D , and have shot at high ISO in a pitch black cave with a very usable result . I'm only now considering upgrading to a 5D MKIII for full frame . I'll still keep and use the 40 though as well if I do .

It wasn't :)

I tried both, the 50D was, when viewed at the same image size, an improvement.

If the image was viewed at 100% on each camera then the 50D noise was slightly more pronounced. However this was more than negated by the 50% increase in resolution.

And the more aggressive NR - 40D has less noise than any current canon APS-C camera

Are you talking from experience of owning both cameras?

Righto

Only raw files out of my 50D had no more noise reduction carried out than my 40D. And the 50D retained more detail when images were viewed at comparable sizes.

i owned both at the same time for quite a while and in the real world to know which image came from which camera you would have to look at the exif info
there's very little between them the differences are more of a debate at review time than in use

the extra 5mp came in handy when cropping but it didn't add much as far as detail was concerned on an uncropped image and if you believe everything you read pixel for pixel the 40d retained more information because of the bigger cell sites but i.m damned if i could see the difference

there both good cameras i still have a 50d and am undecided weather to keep it for the daughter and flog the 5dmk2 or sell it and keep the 5dmk2 for the daughter as she starts a photography course in september

the 50d has a much better resolution screen. The 50d has automatic sensor cleaning which i don't think the 40d has. It also has a higher ISO and more Megapixels.

My daughter has the 40D and I have the 50D and ok apart from the obvious more pixels micro adjustment, they are very similar.

The thing I do like about the 50D is the way they info is displayed on the screen, its better than the 40D in this sense, for me anyways.

If you can get the 40D at a great price you will not be dissapointed at all, gives you the extra cash towards lens's etc

If you've been offered the two then I think I'd take the 50 over the 40 for the reasons outlined above and also because it will be worth more when you sell it on.
If you had a 40 and were thinking of upgrading to a 50 I'd say don't bother.
I did just that and tbh, it wasn't really worth the extra money for the slight benefits I gained. ;)

Agree
To be honest I doubt if you could tell the difference between pics taken with either

IF you do get 50D in the end, make sure to get the latest firmware and disable all image optimisation modes. This makes low ISO acceptable with good lenses. High ISO is not great on either 40D or 50D (that is 800 and above; 400 is just OK)
