I am considering upgrading from my 40d to a 7d. Just wondered whether opinions that it is an actual upgrade and advantages exc hd video and/or to wait another year and go fullframe although all my lenses will need replacing too then? :)

Why do you want to upgrade? That's the key question really! It's definitely an upgrade, but if the bits that are improved aren't the bits you'll be using, there's no point! :)

+1

What areas is your 40D holding you back?

What sort of photography do you do?

The upgrades on the 7D over the 40D aren't really that great for anyone but the action/nature shooters. HD video - well it's good but comes with limitations - I see it as a bonus rather than a reason to upgrade.

Hi :) I shoot models fashion, beauty plus landscapes and wildlife. I asked about and a few people said it was an upgrade to the 40d but in hindsight it doesnt look that way at all. Why do i want to upgrade? hmm to get a better camera but i think full framer should be next then and i will save my pennies :)

Hi :) I shoot models (full frame ) fashion(full frame ) , beauty(full frame ) plus landscapes(full frame ) and wildlife(ah.....:shake:) .

The 7D's principal advantage is the better autofocus, but what you use yours for probably doesn't even stretch the 40D's AF.

The main problem I see is your reason for upgrading... 'to get a better camera'. There's nothing wrong with that at all, but if you're expecting the shots to get better with a better camera, you might be disappointed. Another thing to consider is the lens line-up you've got. I've just moved over to full frame, but I've spent the last 8 months shifting my lenses round to suit the larger sensor. You don't want to spend 1500 on a new body, only to find that your current lenses don't work, or not as well as they should!

Also if wildlife is your thing, be prepared to crop, as you'll be losing effective length on your current lenses!

I'd keep the 40D for now, save for a 5DII, then keep the 40D for wildlife/back up

A 5D for Models, fashion, beauty and landscapes, and a 40D for wildlife sounds like an excellent combo to me.

Yep, keep the 40D as the 7D is an amazing DSLR, and yes is a upgrade. However the benefits of the 7D would not give you an edge on the type of photo's you shoot.
I use my 7D for low light, sports, action photo's which is it great at.
For models fashion, beauty plus landscapes and wildlife shoots your 40D is a great DSLR for.
Perhaps up grade some of your glass to L grade !

I have the 40d and my GF has the 7d,the 2 distinct differences for me are the considerably better all round autofocus and lower light capability.
I don't use Video (yet) so if you do that could be a benefit?

The 40d is perfect for walking round in good light with a good lens on, for example yesterday we were walking round Paris me with the 40d + 70-200 F4 IS and my GF had the 7d alternating between the 50mm F1.4 and the 24-105.
I honestly don't feel I was taking inferior photos by using the 40d!

As everyone says, if you can afford the camera upgrade or an L lens then go for the lens everytime!
