Canon 40D shutter problem. How common is it?

Hi all.
Im currently contemplating buying a second hand 40D, but I cant help but worry about the frequency of reports about an apparent issue with the shutter that keep popping up while Ive been researching the camera. I know the internet can magnify the extent of such things, but I was just wondering if anyone had any input.
I know it may seem like im being over cautious, but moneys not exactly plentiful (cant stretch to a 50D :(), and I couldnt afford any repairs outside of warrenty. Any replies would be greatly appreciated.
 
Had mine for nearly 2 years and have not had a problem, and no-one I know with a 40D has had this problem either.
 
i've had the problem, it happend a day after my warranty ran out but canon gave me a months grace and sorted it for me
 
40D shutter problem? I've had mine 2 years and it hasn't missed a beat (touches wooden table)
 
Same for me - almost 3 years, 11K pics and no probs.
 
no probs with mine so far....you could always try and buy one with a warranty (obviously would cost you a bit more initially) and would prob just be 6 months...

I think if you buy second hand it's just the risk you take, but not heard the 40D any worse than others
 
No probs with mine, fantastic piece of kit.
 
Yes, same here..upgraded to 40D recently and found in some reviews that some of 40D users had to replace the shutter after less than 20K pics..quite worried, but I hope it won't give me such problem..*finger-crossed*
 
Couple of years with my 40d now and (touch wood) no probs at all.
 
how do you guys get such low number of actuations, i hit 11k 5 weeks of ownership
 
No probs for me. Never heard of any either.

Turn off continuous shooting! That's a heck of a lot of Photoshop :eek:

I replied to give a thumbs to the 40d.

My experience in this day and age is that folk are far more inclined to complain than to give praise.

If you've no bad news having asked the question......:thumbs:
 
Sorry to buck the trend, but on returning from Kruger National Park last October I have had problems with the shutter being unresponsive. The Park was certainly dusty but this did not affect a 350D and 450D which were also in the car. The camera is probably on about 20000 shots. It does appear to be fairly well documented on the web that there are problems and at £120 to repair a $10 shutter release button it is not cheap. I will replace the body shortly and keep it as backup.
 
Had mine for just over 2 years before I upgraded. Never had any problems with the shutter and I had just less than 50,000 actuations. Had a few mates who had 40ds as well and never had the problem.
 
Just over 10K in a little over two years
no problems (touch wood :D)
 
I've just purchased a used 40D....and despite reading so many posts regarding the shutter problem, I thought i'd take the plunge. The way I saw it was that for every 1 owner who had a problem, there must have been many more that didn't have any issues.

Mine had only done 4500 actuations and came with an extra year warranty left........so my mind was a bit more at ease. Hopefully, I won't experience the same problems others have in the future.
 
I think it's the old story - no-one ever posts saying "My 40D was fantastic today" whereas people will post when they have a problem, so it's easy to get a completely wrong impression.

No shutter problems here either.

Thats 13 photo's an hour for 5 weeks assuming you don't sleep, more realistically thats 26 photos an hour or roughly 1 every 2 minutes that you were awake for an 5 week period. Either your a pap or you have serious rapid fire itus and a full recycle bin!
 
i shoot 1500 images most weekends and not problems so far!

A friend tried to haggle with MPB on the price of a used 40D, they said they sell them so fast they can't budge on price, think it was something like 13 they sold in january alone!
 
I had an Err 99 problem within a week of buying my 40D. It went to Canon, they could not find a fault and apparently just cleaned the sensor. It went on to take another 15,000 photos without a single hiccup.
 
I have had mine a while now about 3 months after they came out
Am on 47162 no problems at all, if it went wrong I would just send it to Canon :)

My 40d broke a shutter after 30k (4 months), but was still under warranty so went back. The new shutter has had about 30k put on it again and its been spot on.

Any cameras shutter can fail, its luck of the draw and far from common.
 
Just to buck the trend, my 40D shutter broke after approx 40K shots in 18 months. Mirror locked up, shutter half went, Err 99, remove battery, reset camera same symptoms.

Luckily I'd been given a free 3 year warrenty with it from Jessops, so after 8 weeks of fafing (just two more days to fix sir), they gave me replacement value in vouchers and I upgraded to a 50D.
 
No problem with mine after two years.
There will be a percentage of shutters that fail on all cameras.
Just like cars have problems from time to time.
It is no more a problem on the 40d than chance would allow for.
 
18 months and 6600 activations without any issue.
 
I had mine from new for 18 months took 20k shots and never had a single problem.
Every camera type will have couple throw up a problem.
Thing to remember complaints and problems get posted while happy snappers are out snapping, what percentage of 40D's have a problem?
 
The 40D is also an extremely popular camera so for the more they sell of them the more you will hear of any faults
