Hi all hope you can advise me. Last few days of holiday I was checking in to hotel and pretty jet lagged. Let go of camera bag to help open door and it fell off the suitcase. Result 40D only one AF point out of the 9 operates except in DoD mode, so wont focus properly in other modes (not at all in some). Also in quality menu only allows jpeg options, I cant get any Raw sRaw or jpeg +raw options (shows one single line only in menu. Would you think it's repairable? would it be to expensive and would I therfore be better off replacing it/upgrading it?

The only way you would know if it was repairable is to get it checked over, as for cost, friend dropped his 5D camera and 24-105mm lens on the driveway, he claimed on his insurance who got them repaired rather than replaced, he sent it away to canon service centre, think whole bill came to around £300 ish including his excess

Hi Peter, The camera will focus in Depth of field and still take the a good sharp photo, but lost functionality is severe, no Raw sRaw etc and only jpeg quality. Thanks for your advice I will be contacting my insurance company on Monday. and see what they say! Hopefully it wont take to long as I need the camera for a couple of photo courses with Canon early April.

Regards Denis:)

Does it switch properly to the other modes? (AV, TV, M)
The raw behavour sounds very much like it is in full auto (and thus raw is disabled)

It's a miracle. I turned the camera on to check it and everything appears to be working again!!! Can anyone shed any light on what might have happened?

It threw a moody because you tried to kill it:D

Thanks for the laugh, I needed one. But seriously, the question remains, will it "throw a moody" again. Can I count on it being reliable? Has anyone experienced this recovery of functions after dropping their DSLR When mine fell it was in a Loweprow camera bag and had a Battery grip attached Which I have removed (Battery Grip OK working fine with my 20D). I had spent best part of a month in Australia & New Zealand prior to the mishap where Temperatures have been constantly high around 27 to 31C, could this have contributed to the disfunction of the 40D combined with the fall?

Hi Richard, before functions restored themselves, it was M, TV, AV and p that were limited to Jpeg Quality (Other options under Quality simply weren't shown in the menu).
