Forgive me this is a really newbie question but I am struggling to find the answer. Just bought a 2nd hand 40D, how do I find out the date of manufacture and total number of shutter actuations?

Thanks for the link. Doesn't seem to give me date of manufacture though, just shutter count.

Won't work with the 500D.

You can't get the manufacturing date, not even Canon will give you that.

Does it worry you as to when it was made. Whats the shutter count ?

Very difficult to know the date of manufacture. The 40d was announced in august 2007 if that helps.

Also doesn't work with my 500D

You asked about the shutter count on your 40D - if you'd mentioned the 500D I'd have said it won't work with that ;)

Date of manufacture isn't embedded in the firmware to the best of my knowledge. Your best bet would be to try to find that out from the serial number although I'm not sure just how you'd go about doing that!

Why would you want to know?

MTF is a guide at best.. I also have a 40D, secondhand and I've taken the file counter round the clock a few times myself in the last couple oif years.. knowing the shuttercount won't improve my photography, the only effects of knowing the camera was approaching MTF I can think of are either subconsciosly causing me to ration my shots or callously thinking of selling it on to someone else. All in all, it seems a pointless exercise unless you like worrying about things.

The 40D is a crackin' camera, just get out and use it.

My old one had nearly 70,000 on it and the spare which i'm now using has about 1,000

Doesn't seem to be any rule when they might fail, luck of the draw I reckon

You've bought it now, it's not worth worrying about.
