Canon 40D or Canon 50D

Hi,

I'm looking to buy some used Canon gear and was wondering what your thoughts were on the Canon 40D & Canon 50D.

After having a read of reviews online I'm leaning toward the 40D, because of Price, image quality being comparable & ISO possibly being better. Not to mention same Body, AF & being able to live without a non-VGA screen (been using a 1.8" screen on a Nikon D70 previously)

Just wondered what your learned views were.

I've just made the change from a 40D to a 50D.
There's a couple of reasons I went for the 50.
The main one is the microadjust feature which allows you to fine tune the AF of different lenses and store the settings in the camera so any time you attach that lens it automatically sets the AF offset.
The other is the extra resolution which means I can crop my bird shots a little tighter.

The 50D wasn't the big step up I maybe hoped it would be but I'm planning on getting a 7D at some point so the 50D will have better resale value than the 40D by the time I'm ready to buy again.
I've still got the 40D at the mo and at some point may do a side-by-side comparison of the two for the forum just for curiosity's sake as they're both still very popular bodies but from what I've found out so far, IQ wise, they're both very good and AF seems to be pretty much on a par too.
You won't be disappointed with either but getting a 40D would leave you a little in the pot to put towards some glass. ;)
 
40D arrived today...in EXCELLENT condition.

Now I need some lenses.

18-55mm IS II by Canon
(but end ring rotates which will make using polarising filter awkward)

18-50mm 2.8 - 4.5 by Tamron
(heard its touch and go if you get a good one)

55-250mm IS II by Canon

Help !

The 40D is here as I've said.
The 50mm f1.8 is on its way.

Now the rest is confusing me:

Kinda ruled out the Canon 18-55mm Kit Lens. due to rotating end element, making polarising filter usage awkward.

I'm probably going to go for the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens - good reviews and relatively cheap.

What else is in the mix:

-Sigma 18-50mm f2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM
-Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR VC Di II LD Aspherical (IF)
-Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM
-Canon EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS (seems a little pointless with 55-250mm)

What do we think?
Is there anything else to consider?

Sigma 18-50mm is supposed to be a good lens.

I've used a Tamron 17-50mm non VC with my Canon 40d for 18 months now and can highly recommend. It's a bit short at 50mm, but image quality is great. :thumbs:
 
I started with a 40d and 17-85mm which I picked up secondhand. I loved the range of the 17-85mm and it's definitely a step up from the kit 18-55mm.
I looked at the Sigma at a trade show and was told that I wouldn't see much difference in quality from the 17-55mm but you can go to f2.8 when needed.
If you haven't got a lens then i'd give the Sigma a go, then when you upgrade to a 17-55 f2.8 you won't miss the lost range!
 
Hi i think you will be very impressed by the 50mm 1.8 lens, i have used one for some time on my 40d with great results :)

I have not used any of the other lenses you listed but i do use a sigma 20 - 40mm f2.8 lens that although not a huge zoom range does give good results and is a fairly good low light lens at f2.8.

Of the lenses you listed, if you are going for the 55 -250 and already have the 50mm, i would be tempted to go for the Tamron 17 - 50mm 2.8 as it again is a fast lens at F2.8 and covers ranges you do not already have.

Another possibility would be to go even wider, i own the Tamron 10 -24mm which i do rate, but i hear that the Tokina 11 -16mm gets very high praise though does come at a price.

Whatever glass you end up with im sure you will enjoy your 40D, i still think its a great camera :thumbs:
 
I also have a 40D and despite having a few lenses, including the kit Canon lens, the one that gets the most use is the Sigma 17-70 mm f2.8-4 DC Macro. I really like this lens and find it covers the majority of shooting opportunities.

I have the same combination (along with a couple of primes) and I completely agree, it's a great lens. Very versatile and gives excellent results. Actually, tell a lie, I have the older f/2.8-4.5 version without IS - I got it used for £160 and it is sooooooooo much better than the kit lens you can't even compare the two, really. Highly recommended if you're on a budget.
 
With the sigma above, just because it says macro doesn't mean it is only for macro use?

Not sure what you mean, but no, it isn't just for macro (in fact the macro part of the name is a bit misleading as it doesn't do "true" macro).

At 70mm though you can focus on something almost touching the lens hood! Lots of fun to be had with this lens, and my copy is even pretty damn sharp at 17mm & f/2.8. It's the lens I'd really struggle to replace if/when I go full frame, it just does so much so well.
 
I can also vouch for the Sigma 17-70. At the price I paid (£200ish? Had it a few years now so can't remember!) it's a steal, there's very little out there that's comparable in this price range.
 
Well that's put a spanner in the works! I just sold my tamron 17-50 with the intentions of buying a canon 15-85! But sigma 17-70 might be more in my price range!!
 
15-85 is a great lens too apparently. Cost is an issue though.
 
I've just this morning bought a 5D Classic from the classifieds on TP, so I might actually be selling my Sigma 17-70 and Canon 40D (separately) to help fund a 24-70. Not sure though as I was planning on keeping both as backups.

So if you decide you want to go for the Sigma give me a shout, as I may be tempted into selling my copy (nice and sharp), but won't know for a week or so until I've received the 5D and worked out what I want to do next.
