Hi,

My husband & I have had a 30D for nearly two years. Pending a 3 week holiday to California in April, I would like to buy my own SLR. I am considering either the 40D or 50D but am not sure if the 50D really is worth spending the extra ~ £300+ on.

Amongst others, we already have a Canon 70-200 f4L. I am also planning on buying a Canon 17-40 f4L for whichever body I decide on. Will the body make much difference to the quality of my photographs? Will the 40D be adequate to do justice to the lenses?

:help:

Thanks,
Sarah

Welcome to the forum
There is actually another thread about this going on at the moment. Haha!

Go with the 40d and use the spare cash to get more glass

Probably not, much of the time.
  • The 50D has 15MP instead of 10MP. That will help if you want to print very very large or crop very heavily, but for most uses 10MP is plenty.
  • The 50D goes to ISO 12800 instead of ISO 3200. That will help if you want to shoot in very poor light, but for most uses ISO 3200 is adequate.
  • The 50D allows you to fine-tune the AF for each of your lenses. I don't know how much use that is.
Will the 40D be adequate to do justice to the lenses?
Yes, definitely.

Thanks for the comments so far. I didn't see the other thread, but have now read it.

With regards to lenses, my husband is planning on the Sigma 10-20 and Canon 50 f1.8, which I am sure I can borrow if needed ;) I might treat myself to a lensbaby composer too.

I have a 40D and played with a 50D in parks today, the main thing I noticed with the quality of the screen. It`s soooo much better. £250 better? Hmm, not sure. Never really tried anything too taxing with it though.

Very nice camera, but having said that my 40 with decent glass on it is certainly more than capable for what I use it for.
