Canon 40D ISO Help!

Here's hoping someone can help.

My 40D has 'lost' the lower end of its ISO settings when in AV or TV mode - the only thing I can get is Auto and 200 upwards.

I cant select either 100, 125 or 160.

I've checked all the obvious stuff and I'm pretty sure its not me

I don't know about the 40D but the 1DMKIII and 1DSMKIII have a highlight tone priority setting. If you have this on the 40D and it's set to on, then your ISO will not go down below 200.

You can set how it jumps i.e 1/3 stop or one stop - tried it both ways and still no joy.

If you set it to portrait auto (a function I never use) it will then go down to ISO 100.

One of the custom settings (C1, C2, C3) is using ISO 100 and that comes up OK still - just cant get it to anything less than 200 in AV mode.

This is the kind of stuff I worry about endlessly - you know the sort of thing - camera has gone wrong, what will I do on my holiday - how will I manage. That sort of thing - I drive the other half mad.

They give you a thing called an instruction manual with your nice camera.
Read the bloody thing.

I did - believe mne!

I've even got the extended guide to the 40D by David Busch - my mistake was misunderstanding this setting as relating to the histogram.

Ah well, all over now.

I don't normally agree with you but I think this is one of the best posts you've made (Not directing this at the OP, I know I do it enough times)

As a general thing though, I think we could all do with sitting down and RTFMing more. Especially as these bloody things are getting more and more complicated.

I'm a technical geek and never need manuals, but I still have a flick through. it's amazing what tips and tricks you can pick up.

TBH Ive just gone through my 40D's custom functions etc, seeing what might cause it. I wouldn't have picked HTP out either (Not read up on what it does yet )

Another thing on the 40D, if you activate "High" ISO, I think you lose the 100 ISO setting, although you can now get was is, effectively, 3200 ISO.

The dynamic range isn't capable of giving you both, IIRC....

Now, where's that manual gone ??

Nope, I tried that. I knew it wasn't the case with the 30D, but tried it anyway.

All it does is enable the possibility of giving ISO3200. Doesn't affect the ability to use lower ISO's at all. Sort of like a safety switch if you like.
