Canon 40D Err 99

Went to a local racing track today prepared to have a bit of fun with the camera. After about 10 shots...

"Err 99, please turn camera off and on again or re-install battery".

Gutted. First race session of the year, the camera isn't even 2 months old. I've cleaned contacts of lens, battery and took the card out and in again. Same message no matter what I do.

Can anybody shed any light on this?

Err 99 is the catch all "something's wrong but I don't have another number for it"
often means
a) battery flat
b) lens interface pins need cleaning

Have you tried with other lenses.. to rule out if its the lens or the body?
 
I'd be on the dog and bone to Canon mate and ask them. It's still well within its warranty so i'd probably want to get it in for a check-up.
 
I'm not at home so can't check the manual at the moment.

I'm going to give them a ring in the morning, the battery was a bit dead but I charged it for half an hour.

Usually though when the battery is going dead the battery icon will flash and then just shut down after a while.
 
Try putting the battery on charge for a couple of hours. Shouldn't be a battery problem but charging it up should eliminate that.

Also check that the flash isn't trying to pop up and is jammed . Happened to me on my 20D and got the error 99 message. I manually "assisted" the flash and all seemed OK.
 
I had error 99 yesterday on my 20d, I took out the battery, the cf card, closed the batt compartment, closed the cf card compartment put back the battery, cf card and all was well again.
 
Yes - the remove the battery and card option is the first thing to try.

Which lens were you using? That's a bit of a vital question - when I first got my 30D I got exactly the same thing with both my lenses I was using at the time - of course immediately assumed it must be the camera itself until someone on here reassured me it was probably that the lenses were too old for the chips in them to be compatible with the camera! :bang: £150 for a new lens and all was well in the world with everyone except my band manager! ;)

As has been said above, Err99 is basically Canon speak for "Well I dunno, do I?!". If you think there is a chance that it might be your lens, try setting the Aperture to wide open and see if that helps - did with mine, and at least got me out of a hole in the short term.
 
This may seem a strange question but were you near a transmitter / phone mast or radar.
With my 20d i was photgraphing military aircraft with about 7 other photographers and as the aircraft turned towards us all the Canon uses shouted b****r i have just got a err99. The conclusion we all came to was that it was a radio / radar emmision.
I turned the camera off and reset the battery and card. All has been fine since.

I had this problem a few weeks back and as (b) is suggested here it was my connection of the lens to the body. I`d not clicked it in fully. Took lens off and put back on again, all was well. :)

Don't the military use Nikon :lol:

Seriously could that have been a AF Assist beam causing the aircraft to think you were an enemy trying to gain target to which it automatically sent out a jamming frequency. I'm sure I read an urban legend somewhere (scotland perhps) of a bored policeman trying to speed check a passing jet fighter only to find the device they were using to stop working permenantly the sotry goes on that if it wasn't for the quick action of the pilot the policeman would have been blown up as the plane went to automatically fire a defence rocket (pretty sure it's not true).

Doesn't help with the Err99 - I'd send it back and get a replacement.
 
Depends whats wrong with it... Technically you might be able to demand a replacement under the Sale of Goods act 1979 (as amended).. I'd have to check the timescales as to whether you'd be entitled to a replacement, or whether the store could send it off for repair.

I'll check for you tomorrow unless anyone gives you an answer tonight :)
 
Brand new 400D and had the screen saying replace battery. Took it out and put it back in and worked again showing full charge.

Could have just been a connector problem but not happened again.

If it keeps happening then perhaps a call or email to Canon in case it's a known fault else would be best to take it back to Jessops first and let them see it. The only thing I've got against repairs is being without whilst it's being repaired - which if it's a long time I believe is unfair. See what they say I reckon!
