Yes
I have been experimenting with time lapse photography and when using my 40D with the OEM Canon timer remote (TC-80N3) have been getting irratic 'focus bleeps'. Not all the time, it might go through 20-30 frames then I get maybe 1 maybe 10 bleeps like it is hunting for a focus point, it is set in full manual on the camera and the lens (sigma 24-70 f2.8)

Thanks for reading.

Andy
PS - Just love this site

Yes but this doesn't stop it from doing what it is doing focusing/exposing....

its not actually focusing when it bleeps thats just the focus comfirmation, it is probably swaying slightly in the wind causing the focus point to move over a point in focus and a point out of focus. This would cause the focus system to bleep to confirm the focus.

It is on full manual (including focus)

It still beeps to tell you you have manually got it in focus.

Its not focusing, its just the focus confirmation.

It should not bleep when in manual focus, that is the whole point of manual focus - you set it to what you want, sharp/soft etc.

Go and try it now to proove my point.

It will beep everytime the focus moves too - so if you are shooting timelapse there is going to be movement. When something moves into focus it beeps to tell you so. Then if that moving thing stays still it wont beep again, as it has already told you that is in focus, it will beep however if something else has come into focus. Manual or Automatic focus has nothing to do with it.

I turned the beep off in the menu as soon as I got it.

Andy,

You will hear the focus confirmation bleep, AF point will light up and the viewfinder confirmation light will come on in MF if the shutter is half pressed or the AF-On button is being used.

All it does is bleep when its infocus, it isnt doing the focusing you are still doing that, its just an aid for people who are focusing manually, you can turn it off if you want.

OK, let me give you the scenario. Camera in full manual, Lens in manual focus. Remote set to take 1 shot every 10 seconds

Shots 1-20 - NO BLEEP
Shot 21 2 bleeps
Shot 22 5 bleeps
Shot 23 no bleeps
Shot 24 1 bleep
Shot 25 8 Bleeps
Shot 26 no bleeps

When there is more than 1 bleep they are in varying rhythm (can't think of a better way to describe)

I will set this up again to day and record it to make it clearer.

I suspect that when it takes the shots it's fooling the camera into thinking there's a half press on the shutter button which will make it bleep. Try it again but only have one focus point active and see if that affects it.

I only use 1 focus point (center)

Once you've focused switch to another focus point that's over something plain. In MF you can easily get into a situation where the focus confirmation will bleep several times in a row and the camera moves slightly in and out of focus, try it and you'll see.

The focus points are very sensitive and slight movements of the camera and landscape can cause it to bleep. It wont affect the photographs at all it just could be annoying.
