hi guys, im going to view a canon EOS 400d this afternoon as my first camera, what should i look out for?

Anything in particular that i should look at before buying a camera?

Im taking my laptop with me to make sure it uploads picstures etc, and to check that there are no marks on the lens etc.

Anything else i should do?

I really dont want to waste £250, as im only in school and saved up for ages for this camera!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

its ag reat camera - i have had mine for 18 months and about to upgrade. I will be keeping it as a back up though! my only real issue was the size but a grip help!
 
Push all the buttons, scroll through all the menu's, change a few things about to make sure everything works. Ask questions, stuff like has it ever been dropped/banged/dinked etc. Look on the body for wear and tear, marks on the LCD at the back. Take the lens off, have a gander inside to see whether theres any dust, fluff, small animals (joking) etc.

Just basically get a good feel for it dude, take some snaps with it, focus at a few different things, change the focus points around to make sure they all work how they should.

If you get a lens with it, check the lens for marks, zoom it in/out to check it all works etc.

Dont feel bad about asking questions, ask as many as you need to ask so that you feel comfortable.

It's a great little camera, I loved mine and it served me well for 18 months, and is still going super strong with the new owner. :thumbs:

Or do you twist the lens?

Im a total newbie to slr's, how would i check all these stuff?

all the zoom is done by twitsing the lens barrel.
although there is a zoom facility for reviewing pictures.

I would suggest that you obtain some form of written warrany from the seller to the effect that if any faults appear in - say - two weeks the seller will either cover the cost of the repair, or will refund your money.
This will then give you the opportunity to become familiar with the camera and its operation, and thus reveal any problems. It will also allow you to ask the advice of a friend who is familiar with DSLR's.
 
And, just to make sure, what is it worth?

There is a kit lens with it aswell, (18-55) and boxed with all cables etc.

Maybe ask roughly how many pictures its taken... mine is on 20k and still going strong but everything has a shelf life...

Also try and get the CD's that come with it, Canon do a quite good photo processing program which is good to get you started. If they dont have it, i wouldnt worry I am sure someone on here will copy the cd and pop it in the post.

Its a great camera BTW, i dont regret buying mine one bit :D
 
As for price i dont know... But i have just had a quick look and found it new for £344 delivered from Tesco. If you shop around you might be able to get a better deal than that.

Ebay is always a good way of judging the 2nd hand value of things, look at auctions which have ended for similar products to get a range of their 2nd hand value.
 
Make certain you feel comfortable holding and using the camera, playing with a selection of different brands in a shop first can be useful.

If you know nothing about DSLR cameras can you take someone that does.

Is it a shop or private sale?

Oh and if you buy it get the book "understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson.

Whereabouts are you as it may be worth taking someone with you who has a little more knowledge. Whatever questions you ask would be easy to fob off with maybe less than honest answers and unless you know a little yourself or have the presence to carry it off, then you could be a lamb to the slaughter.

Ahhh if I was closer I'd have gladly accompanied you.

If you take a couple of pics and upload them, the filename should give you a rough idea of the number of shots it has taken .. something like img8563.*** which equates to 8563 shots taken but not necessarily the amount of times the shutter has been used. 50,000 is the guesstimate of shutter actuations on a 400d
 
well guys, im now a very proud owner of a mint canon 400d inc a 18-55 lens.

It is in as new condition and it has only had 385 shutter actuations, so its basically brand new piece of kit!

Hi in photobucket right click on a picture you want to upload>>> click properties>>> copy the HTTP >>> post reply on this site and click insert image look like an envelope with a stamp on it >>>> past into the box click ok and hey presto.

Bere in mind i am on 19 tables per day so this could go pear shaped best i can do have a go
