Hi all new to this forum but looks A1.

Here is my ?, I have just bought a new canon 400D (got a good deal being the older model) and was wanting to know if they are any good.

The reason i ask is i bought it as i had to sell my other camera before i even got into photography in the way i wanted too. The camera i sold was a Nikon D80 which i had spent a bit of money on through a few lenses and the like but at the time it had to go due to a short in funds.

Looking at the Canon it's not much compared to the Nikon and i was pointed in the way of the D80 by a friend and he bummed it up big time so im not sure if my 400D is any good.

Some advice would be great before i start buying bits for it.

Thanks, Kev.

The short answer is that the 400d is good, as is the D80

Not even, but both will get you the shot you want under most conditions.

How strange:thinking:. to buy a camera and then ask if it is any good  I have the 400d and find it OK. But I am a newbe, to photography. But I think it all boils down to, the person behind the camera.

Not strange, i loved the whole photography thing but as i said my funds took a kicking. The reason i bought the 400d was it was all i can afford at the moment and it gets me back to snapping.

I was only asking as i did do some research but only off the net and i wanted joe publics take on the camera i did.nt have much of an option on what i bought as i was set a budget to get another camera.

And yes it would have been better to maybe ask you's lot before i bought it but i am also new to photography and only had my D80 a month i also never new web site's like this where about.

I don't think there is such a thing as a bad camera these days.

As has already been pointed out, both cameras do the job under most conditions. I think the significant thing you need to ask is out of the two, which one feels better in the hand and also which feels more intuitive for adjustments like exposure compensation?

As a general rule, Nikons have more external buttons to control things that are within the operating menu on Canons, so you need to bear this in mind.

As for accessory range, they're very much alike; well established brands.

Hope this helps in some way :)

The 400d is a good little camera, it's cabable of producing excelent pictures in the right hands, I'd say it is a fairly compatable match for the D70, it's not the latest version, but still a good camera. Wayne

i used to have the 400D and it produced great images. Look through my flickr and you will find all but the most recent handful of pics are done on the 400D.
