Canon 400D package deal?

I was just at Jessops asking for a 400d body, and conveniently enough they told me that they haven't had one of those in a long time.

So, they offered to sell me the 400d with the lens kit (which I know is crap) + the lens I was intending on buying(50mm f1.8) + a 4gb memory card for £489 (which was apparently reduced from £525)...

Now, my question is whether this is a good deal or not? Should I go for it or continue to pursue just the 400d body + the lens I want elsewhere?
 
I'd get it with the kit lens as I think you'll find the 50 1.8 on it's own a bit restrictive, don't get me wrong but it's bit on the long side for a cover all basis lens given the crop factor and the kit lens which isn't as bad as people make out will let you discover what focal lengths you need your future lenses to cover.

What about the price? Do you think it's reasonable, or over-priced?
 
Actually, since the sensor is smaller and the images will end up being cropped, would it be better if I just got a 35mm prime instead of the 50mm?
 
I did - but I'd subsumed the good advice from alex2001. If you insist, A 400D body and nifty fifty will come to about £430 max with postage costs, again looking at CPB, so £465 with the memory card too.
 
What about a 450D body?
 
the 35mm will give you roughly a 50mm equivalent on a crop sensor which is thr traditional fixed lens size. However a 35mm prime will cost you a good 3-4 times the price of the nifty fifty so I guess it depends on funds. The nifty fifty also works out as an 80mm field of view on a crop sensor which is pretty much the traditional portrail length so it is excellent value if you plan on taking this sort of picture.

What do you think about the Canon EF 35mm f2 Lens? Saw it for 179.00 - which is just over double the price of the 50mm
 
I will have my 400D body (with grip) for sale in the next few days (about 9 months old, VGC, less than 900 clicks). The 400D is a very good camera.

I'm not hugely in the know about the lens but thats nearly 3 times the price of a nifty fifty from kerso.

Alot of people go with this sigma lens as it's very quick for the money but it only works on cropped sensors so maybe of less use in the long run and isn't as sharp as the full sized competition.
