I was using my camera a canon 400D with the 18-55mm kit lens and error 99 showed and would not take a shot,it recommended that i switch off and power up or remove the battery which i did and it still would not take,i removed the lens and changed to my 70-300mm sigma dg and it worked ok,i replaced the 18-55 and it worked for a few shots and then again error 99,any one out there had this problem i checked the manual and there was no mention of error 99 in the error codes.
I'm thinking it could be a lens problem any help appreciated

Here is what Canon will said to try:

Thank you for contacting Canon product support. I'm sorry to hear that
your EOS xxD is displaying an "ERR 99" message.

To isolate the cause of the issue, we suggest that you do the
following:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.

Does the "ERR 99" message appear? If it does, then the camera should
be serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of
steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.

Does the "ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.

If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser
or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the
camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.

If the "ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is
attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.

If you see the "ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the
camera should be serviced.

For factory service, forward your digital camera (remove the CF card
and battery) properly packaged and insured, with a letter describing the
difficulties. Be sure to include your name, address, telephone number,
and proof of warranty (if applicable). Send to a Canon Service Center.

The problem is probably the lens to camera "Pins" they need a little clean.

thanks for the help done all the above and guess what it worked!!! for around 10 shots still getting error 99 could this be a problem with the camera body hope not carnt afford to replace it.
steve.

Had this on my 40D, general consensus is that it is dirty contacts. Either on the camera pins/mating lens contacts. Get some pukka cleaning alcohol and a lens cloth and clean them all! It MAY be that the pins need replacing... but its not very costly. Give the clean up a try first!

had this on a 400d as well, and it turned out to be a problem with the lens. does it happen at all apertures and focal lengths ? mines only happened when I had it at its widest and lowest f-stop.

had this on my 400D and it was the shutter that was broken. Try doing a sensor clean as this opens the shutter, do it a few times to test if it is the shutter sticking.

thanks for all your advice cleaned the contacts on the lens and pins on camera body and guess what? working ok for now fingers crossed,:) this seems to be a general concern for canon users lets hope its as simple as a bit of a clean.
thanks again for your comments.
