I have been getting the Err99 for a while and have read the threads here and followed the advice (of things you can do yourself before sending it away to get fixed) and nothing has worked.

Now it is worse because on the automatic setting my camera won't focus now at all, specifically when I zoom in - any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have a Canon 400D, no longer under warranty

What exactly have you tried?

The 400D is a bit on the old side now so if it is well used, it may have had its time. What I'm trying to say is, it's probably cattle trucked.

I have tried:

switching it on and off
removing the battery and putting it back in
cleaning the contacts on both lens and camera, using an eraser
tried using another lens

I had exactly the same thing with my old 400D and had to pay Jessops just over £100 to repair it (they gave a six-month warranty for that though).

What you can try doing is cleaning the lens contacts with a rubber, and see if that does anything. But don't let yourself get frustrated - if it ain't working, it'll need to go to the doctor.

Here was my thread of woe and happiness:

just a thought have you tried starting camera with the memory card out

Dont know if this helps but a quick google came back with this info:

Think most of this has already been covered BJIC

(from Canon USA)
To isolate the cause of the issue, we suggest that you do the following:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99″ message appear? If it does, then the camera should be
serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99″ message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.

If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser
or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the
camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99″ message only appears when one particular lens is
attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.

If you see the “ERR 99″ with a different Canon lens attached, then the
camera should be serviced.
