:(hi guys and girls

I have a canon 400D and the following lens I was using at the time of the issue. A Sigma 24-70

I have been on holiday in spain, and I have been taking some pictures. I went for a walk and got some snaps of flowers etc, then I came to the town square, and for a differnt perspective on the church tower I lay on the ground and shot upwards to get the sky and the tower.

at that point my camera started to show Err99 on the rear, i done as it asked and rebooted the camera and removed th battery and then reinserted. I was then able to real of another one picture before the issue occoured again.

I left the battery out while walking home, and after around 20 minutes I stuck the battery back in and it all worked fine, went out for another walk and got another 20 odd pictures.

Today I was down at the beach and I had just gotten out of the car and seen a nice pic opertunity, wipped out the camera and went to shoot. Same error.

I had a check on a few websites and they say to clean the contacts on the lens and the body, I have done that but still the same issue. I have had the battery out for an hour now and still nothing.

When you take a picture the mirror moves up but the sensor does not open again after the shot is finished.

I bought the camera from jessops around a year ago, however I had another issues with the Cf card not reading in the body. i took it back and tehy replaced it. However that was around 10-11 months ago. I don't know if the body is still under warrenty in this case.

Could anyone confirm, and also can some one give me any advice on the Err 99

Cheers

Mike

If memory serves, err99 is an all purpose error message, meaning it could be a number of things.

If you bought it under a year ago, it should still be under warranty, get it replaced, shouldnt matter its been replaced once already right? Someone correct me if I am wrong :)

If you take it back to Jessops, they won't replace it outright.
It is covered under the 1 year manufacturer's warranty, but nothing else.
It will be sent off for repair, and will take about 3 weeks to return.

Alternatively, you could send it direct to Canon, as long as you provide a proof of purchase date.

A couple of quick things to try before sending it away.....

Try with another lens....Err 99 can occur when the aperture doesn't stop down to take the shot. If you don't have another lens then use AV mode and set the lens to it's widest setting....f/2.8 if it's the lens I think it is.

Secondly.....there are two batteries....the main one and also a small lithium button cell. Remove them both at the same time. I think the button cell is in the battery door lid. You might lose any custom settings that you've programmed.

I have tried to remove both the batteries and still no joy, just means now I have lost all my settings LOL

I have tried the Body with all of my lens. I have the kit lens which it still produces the same error.

I am going to take the body back to jessops when I get back to Edinburgh, so that will be saturday. the anoying thing is I now have no camera to get pictures with while I am here.

I will need to see if I can dig out my receipt with the details from jessops

I had this problem with my 30d and kit lens. It turned out, as Bob says to be the apeture on the lens was stuck. I was told it would be a 100 quid to take a look so had a look myself "unsuccessfuly".

Get someone to confirm this and send the lens back to Sigma. I've heard thier customer sevice is excelent so the unrealistic quote of £100 is probably something you wont haave to worry about.

P.s If you find the apeture the lens is stuck on you should be able to use it at that without error.

well my sigma lens is still under warrenty, so if it has a problem I will get in contact with sigma.

i was just playing about with my camera just now and its still doing the same, even with the Kit lens, also tryed to change the modes from Tv to Av and even Auto. Still doing the same. tried changing the Appature value to F11 and others but still the same issue.

Mike

If its a problem with more than one lens then I would say its in the camera. Mine only did it with the kit lens.

Hope you get it sorted soon Mike.

Something else you can try first is cleaning the contacts both on the lens and camera, grease or dirt can result in miscommunication bwtween the two.

already cleaned them, I read on a page I found on google that it could be the communication, but still the same

Mike

We had this with older Sigma lenses with our 20Ds a few years ago. It basically meant the lens couldn't 'talk' to the digital camera so we either ditched the elns (the cheap ones) or had the other rechipped at Sigma.

yeah I cleaned the contacts witha rubber, but upside down so teh bits did not call into teh camera.

I just called Jessops World Camera shop in Edinburgh, to ask if there was anything I was missing or if I can sort it while I am here in spain. They suggested a firmware reflash, However I am already on 1.1.1 so I done that with fingers crossed....NO Luck

I asked about a repair and he said it will be 3-9 weeks. Grrrrrrrr, It better not be as I have my second wedding and my first glamour photo shoot arranged for the end of June.

So I am now cameraless and there is always a cracking sunset each night from the roof terrace... and I have no camera. Grrrrr

Mike

So I am now home from Spain and I took my body into jessops in Edinburgh, after some investigation and trying every possible option that I had already done, they said it was bust and it needed to be sent away for a repair.

However it would not be that simple. i had this body replaced in October last year for a flash problem. however my receipt did not reflect this.

So they guy told me it would have to be a chargeable repair. I asked him to check his computer and the serial numbers as they did not match cause the body was replaced in this store.

After i left them for an hour they found the swap over and now the body is away getting fixed. I just hope it can be back for the 20th of june as I have a grad ball pictures to shoot, and then a graduation on the 26th

Mike

When it comes back ask them to give you a receipt showing the 'new' serial number in case you have problems again in the future.
