Canon 400d battery life

Hello all, I'm new to photography, I have purchased a second hand canon 400d looks like it hasn't been used much,
How many pictures roughly should a fully charged battery take, so I know of I need new batteries.

depends on what card and your save to card settings are raw less than jpg but always shoot raw, also are you using flash that factors a lot
 
Thanks for the advice Dave, with shooting raw images, would I need a larger memory card as I only have 4gb and is the speed of the card that significant ?

4gb is great just a 4gb card in my 400d Raw 381 shots, 7D raw 4gb 146, anyway its not about that its more the settings and any flash used with you batteries, ie if your using servo AI it will use more battery power if you use flash it will further use more battery power IS uses more battery power as well

I know this really can't be answered accurately but if I took the camera out without using the flash in raw format, how many shots should I be able to take on a full charge battery.

I have a BG-E3 grip with 2 batterys in for long shots or cold weather as the batterys don't last as long when its cold.
Then another one for shorter shots plus 2 4gb cards which hold like just Dave said 381 raw but the more photos you have on the card the longer it will take to write to it which means less battery life.

As for your question: I make sure the battery in the camera is fully charged before i go out and have never had it go flat on me. But i think you need at least two batterys just in case

While I'm asking questions

I've read that essential bit of equipment is having an av lens on a lens, is this essential or will it degrade the pictures ?
 
Do you mean UV filter ? if so then yes, if only to protect the end of the lens put don't pay £20 you can get them for around £5-10
 
I was out doing star trails a week or two ago.

fully charged battery, 110 exposures at 30 seconds each and it was minus 5 degrees.

Battery went down only a third according to the indicator.

However, I set the camera up so that it did not review each exposure on the lcd plus I turned the rear display off completely so I think that helped too.

I was always told about the UV filter too and have one, but took it off about 6 months ago as I decided I would be better off image quality wise and I'd just be careful.

However, I think if I was every going near a beach (sand and salt air) I would probably put it back on.
