Canon 40 mm

Not sure what you're asking? Are you looking for a manual focus lens to go on a digital canon body? If so, which canon body?

Or are you looking for an autofocus lens that works on a camera that doesn't work with af? - in which case, IIRC, there was a (ridiculous looking) af lens that worked on the old Canon FD mount bodies, but I think it was a zoom.

I'm sure you're aware of the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens which is AF but wont work on the FD bodies, but does work fine on EF bodies - including the film ones.

Thankyou for the replies I’m looking for a lens for my canon 7 that would be equivalent to a 40 mm lens in old school lenses ,for example a 50 mm lens on a canon A1 is not the same as a 50mm lens on a canon 7 d if that makes any sense

If I understand you correctly?

As the 7D has a crop factor of 1.6 then to get the FoV of 50mm on a full frame camera.....the closest available lens FL is 30mm not 40mm, a 40mm equals 64mm.

HTH ?

As Box says, if you're looking for something that gives a 40mm field of view on a 7D, then you'd be looking for the EF (or EF-S) 24mm (38mm equiv) or an EF 28mm (45mm equiv). A precise 40mm would be a 25mm lens which doesn't (AFAIK) exist.

Hope that also helps.

The Canon 7 is a rangefinder camera that takes M39 lenses if I understand correctly. It’s a 35mm camera so the lens has no crop factor to have concern with.

What focal length is it you’re looking for? You mentioned 40mm, where have you got that figure from?

Thanks again for the replies I’m looking to purchase an af canon lens for my 7 d that would give me the equivalent to a 40mm in old school terms , I used to have a Pentax k1000 with a 40mm lens on it and it was perfect for my work

Thanks again for all the replies and links so i have decided to go for a canon 28mm 2.8 which seems to be the eqivilent of a 50mm lens in old school terms which is the lens i mostly use for my work, i read a review by a person called ken rockwell and he highly praises it (who ever he is) he certainly gives indept info on it unless im missing something now to go hunting cheers

Pleased to hear that you are sorted :) though, are you getting the IS one or the non IS version?

PS Ken Rockwell, eh!.................he is seen as a bit marmite with his views and reviews
