Hi i cant decide which camera to go for there all roughly around the same price with the Canon 40D being cheaper but just wanting some advice on which to go for so any comments welcome

Just as a point im not bothered bouth the video function on the Nikon D90 i want it as a camera and nothing else

The D90 will be slightly better at high ISO performance, but I'm perfectly satisfied by the way my 40D handles the ISOs, I happily use it at 1600. The D90 also offers wireless flash triggering, so if you ever plan to use a separate speedlite wirelessly off the camera that would be useful. Whereas the 40/50D benefit from solid magnesium alloy bodies (though the D90 is certainly not flimsy!) and slightly faster shooting.

The 40D is superb value, and leaves you more money to spend on lenses.

Go to a shop and try out both, pick the one which feels best in your hands.
Personally, I much prefer the grip style and button placements on the canons, but you could very easily be the other way and prefer the nikon, so it's worth trying them.

I'd also look into what lenses you're going to get. There might be a canon or nikon lens that you particularly like the look of.

Pick the one that feels best to you, put a decent lens on it, and whatever you get, you'll be getting a great camera ;)

I'm in the same boat (new to the forum too)

i'm looking for an upgrade from my baby 400d and i'm torn between the 40d and the 50d.
i've been looking at both of them now for weeks and STILL cant decide!!

i have seen a 40d with grip, A1 condition, for roughly the same price as the 50d body only that i've seen ....

i have a lovely nifty fifty and i'm purchasing a tamron 17-50 f/2.8 next month so i really dont mind if the cameras come with a lens (i dont like the kit lenses anyway!)

somebody, please make my mind up for me, as i cant do it myself!!! lol

thanks in advance :)

If you already have canon lenses then theres little point in going to Nikon, 50D all the way, grips are cheap enough to pick up later and no way does a 40D with grip equal a new 50D in my book price wise.

I cant make my mind up either thats why i want someone to do it for me haha i have access to Canon lenses which helps and the 40D/50D are the 2 ive been favouring and ive been looking for bundles but i dont wanna pay a ridiculous amount if i dont need to

another vote for 50D here

I can only echo the 'play with them' advice.
One will definately feel better in your hands, or have a menu system that clicks a little easier with you etc.

I like the Canon menu system and use it for my underwater photography (Powershot).. but the Nikon D90 felt much better in my hands than it's Canon rival, so I went with that for land stuff!

the problem is its hard to get hold of both/all 3 in my hands as many places dont stock them anymore ive had hold of the 40D so i`d assume the 50D is the same and that felt nice where as my dad has the D40 but i dont know how that compares to the D90

If you haven't already got lenses then take your pick. They are all good cameras. I would go for a 40d.

I already have canon gear, flashgun, remote, lenses etc .... so I don't want to change at all.
just torn ....
the 40d is better for my bank balance but may be able to stretch to a 50d at the right price.
I'm not after new ones ..... just great condition 2nd hand.
so, if anyone within reasonable travelling distance from Manchester has any of these bodies for sale ..... I'm interested! :) :)

I used to have the 50D & all my racing photos were taken with it,loved it,just went full frame now though.:)

yay,
i'm now the proud owner of the 50D
(well, i will be on friday when i collect)
:):):)

thanks for the input

beans on toast for tea for the next month or so!
:lol::lol:

at least you have a camera you can use and enjoy... it doesnt get flushed down the loo... :D

congrats!!!!!

Welcome to the forums, Charlie :-)

Tis a pleasure. You'll learn so much here.

Smaller, much smaller. Prior to my D90 I had a D40x, the D90 is a larger body so felt much more natural in my (to be fair, big) hands.

So ....
i'm picking my 50D up on friday :)

Guys n Gals .... is this the right way to go?? I cant help but thinking that a 40D with a great lens, would be better??
I just keep reading that the 40D is a better body??
I shoot alot of band stuff (only my hubbys, nothing fabulous!! ) so top notch ISO capabilities are important and folks keep saying that the 40D is better for this. Is it really THAT much of a difference?

Not that i'm pulling out of the sale or anything, my word is true, i will meet the seller and complete the purchase. (I've got a brilliant deal on the 50D btw :))

on another note ......
anyone (or knows of someone) selling a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (pref non VC as i've been informed its sharper than VC)
and a 50D grip (are generic grips any good or would you say genuine canon?? i have a canon grip on my 400D but been looking at cheaper options?)

Thanks in advance for any input :)

BTW
D_finni ... sorry to bombard your thread :)

Got my 50D yesterday (via MPB Photographic) - looks a great camera & I can't wait to try it out at the weekend.

As far as I'm aware the body is certainly as good as if not better than the 40D.

CharlieMarie - I was in the same boat as you, trying to choose between the two, but decided on the newer model (which at least ought to be worth more to trade-in or sell-on in the future).

Hope you come back onto the forum with your verdict when you get the camera....I don't think you'll be disappointed though!

Steve

Haha dont worry bout it its all good really as it does help i think im also going for the 50D but theres that thing in the back of my mind thats saying 40D and spend the extra on a lens

that's what's been niggling at me, but i've got a brill deal on the 50D (just under 5 for immaculate condition, boxed with accs and 1k count!!!)
i've been looking at 40's going for more than that with more on the clock!!
so, i reckon its not too bad :) i'm picking it up friday, cant wait! i just wish i had the lens i want too. will have to just use my 50mm till i can get the tamron :(

Thing is some people dont understand how hard a decision like this can be hahaha n yeah i saw the deal i had a look aswell lol but ive got a deal with a 50D that ive been trying to settle for a fortnight but seem to be getting messed around its boxed 50D with warrenty and 28-135mm lens £450 but it seems too good to be true at the moment

crikey that is good!! whats the shutter count?

Apparently it's like brand new so it's very low but like I said I think it's too good to be true there's that jiggle that's telling me it's a con

Just been looking on argues website they have the latest nikon d3100 kit for £499 which is a good price lol

Hmmm, does seem a little low, but you never know?? could just need a quick cash sale? (or doesn't know the value of it?? lol)

I found the 50D better than the 40D at high ISOs, which was what I was looking for as I do a lot of indoor sports. Its a supurb camera, you'll love it!
