Yes
I want a Canon 35L, but in reality i can't afford one. Are there any viable alternatives to this lens, or is it just a case of waiting?

If that's what you want, then wait for it. It will always be on your mind no matter what other lens you get.

When i say waiting, i actually mean, i won't get it, as i would have to wait for a very long time!

Canon 35mm F2 or the Sigma 30mm F1.4 are pretty much your only choices if you want auto focus.

Reading that makes me want to buy one. I've been thinking about something a little wider than my 50mm 1.8 for my 7D/40D. That seems just the ticket price wise. Although I do find myself considering the Canon EF 28mm f1.8 USM for the USM and more pleasing bokeh - "Background blur quality is decent. Out-of-focus highlights have 7 sides when the lens is stopped down thanks to a 7-blade aperture."

Canon-EF-28mm-f-1.8-USM £369*

canon-ef-35mm-f-2.0 £209*
