canon 350d

Looks like part of the shutter curtain. I'd guess repair would cost more than another 350d.
 
Yep...
It's your shutter.
It's dropped a blade.
I've done three shutters over the years and each one of them has done exactly that.
Here's a shot of my 1D MkII
Off to Canon heaven as it's probably not worth the cost of repair.
You'd probably pick up a better second hand body for less than the cost of a fixing it.

phil dont supose you know if we could remove that blade, if it would still operate? was thinking of putting a strong nd filter on it, and using a lens cap as the shutter, much like the very early camera's :D

Interesting concept.
You could try I suppose, but I doubt you would have much success.
It's a pretty big job to get at the shutter.
The camera needs to be stripped right back to bare bones.
 
yeah ive looked. was thinking pliers xD. thats if its in a bin it :( state
 
Sorry to hear about the death of your camera!
MPB photographic have got some 350d and 10Ds for around £90 though.
 
I'm really not usually an advocate for DIY repairs or poking and tinkering around when you don't know what you're doing . . . but if it's destined for the bin anyway . . .

I don't think I could restrain myself from some YouTube tutorials and a bit of home surgery to see if I could get into it and fix it.
Nothing at all to lose and even if it didn't work it would be an interesting learning curve on dslr innards.

I am gutted about my slr but I have done the right thing and it has gone to the canon heaven :'(
 
To be honest, I don't think a DIY repair would be possible. I've stripped down a couple of DSLR's whilst doing infrared conversions and the shutter curtain is VERY flimsy. If you blow gently on it, it flexes quite a lot so I think any sort of tool touching it would most likely bend or crease the blades of the curtain.

I've just had a look at one of my scrap donor cameras and yeah I would say definitely not a DIY job
Also if you were to remove the curtain I would have thought the camera would throw up some sort of error code and not fire anyway.

Thats why i have asked for the camera to be destroyed in an environmentally way. i can fix broken pc's not poorly cameras so my tog days are over for now.

Well there you go - something new learnt for me today :)
I really had no idea that shutter curtains were so delicate.
Julian, should you ever feel inclined to do it, a tutorial on how you do your conversions might actually go down very well in the tutorial section here.

I'll bear that in mind next time I strip down my D40X. I can never decide what cut off IR filter to use in it so I keep changing it every now and then.
It's been 680nm, 720, 760 and I think also 580nm. Next time I'll take some photos of it and write one up:)

I've got a canon G5 doing nothing you can borrow until you can afford a replacement if you want - regular viewers will recall that I lent it to someone else who was in this fix for TPday last year

its not slr but it has a reasonable level of control

Post round here is terrible ( There's at least two cameras lost in its maw as I speak) , but i'm heading north the weekend after next and could maybe a arrange a drop off or meet somewhere.
