I've a chance of a good 2nd hand one. Anyone got one? It's a smallish body I hear and very light. Is it sturdy?Good pics? What lens do you use with it...general pics I would do.Thanks.:)

Hi Alan,

I had recently sold my gear and ended up left with a 350D and a good lens the 70-200 F4L for a trip to New York and i took some fantastic shots with it. The camera itself is fine so don't be put off by the fact it's a few years old. I wouldn't pay any more than about £170 for it though. It is a nice camera and if you partner it with the canon 50mm f1.8 lens (£60 second hand) you'll get some really nice portrait pictures. You could also pair it with the standard kit lens for the 450D which is the 18-55 IS (£60-£70 second hand) and this will give you a bit more flexibility when you shoot i.e wide angles, portraits etc. Welcome to the forum mate.

that was my very first dslr. bloody great little camera. like Scott said, dont be put off by its age and dont over pay.
good luck and welcome to the forum btw :)

There's a second hand one in the local cash converters with a kit lens for £350. I thought that was WAY over priced so I hope you're getting it for less than that Alan.

Very capable camera.

After weeks of trying with my 1D (unsuccessfully!), picked up a second hand 350 and the first shot I done.......

Bloody typical!!!

Smashing camera. Not to be under-estimated

My first digital camera too...and I still have it...and still use it. I swear the image quality in 99% of conditions is equal to my 40D. It is built like a tank too, my 40D has had a shutter replaced and still likes to do random things, my 350 has never missed a beat!

If you want some example pics have a look here - http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=45279752@N00&q=350d&m=text - nothing new in there as I am naughty now and never tag my flickr stuff properly, but I think all the shots in that link were shot on my 350D

Thanks everyone for replies. The lens included is a Canon 18-55..is that a decent lens? The seller wants about £150 for the lot. He's now got a D40.And thanks for posting the photo!(Sorry, Scott, that's the lens you mentioned...didn't realise.)

The 18-55 is basically a 'kit' lens. Pretty standard and nothing special.
Used in the right way however, can produce some good shots.

And that to me is a pretty good price

Hi alan, thats the standard lens, (well i presume it wil be) I am currently selling my 350d but only beacuse i felt i "wanted" an upgrade, other than that its been my first DLSR and i loved it, and the few photos i have in my gallery were taken with it.

Hi, just +1 to what every one else has said.

I use two of them:razz:
Everything on my site below is taken with a 350D. Just got the nifty for it too, which I'm looking forward to having some fun with.

Price is spot on. Enjoy it!

It's a cracking little thing. Up to ISO 400 it's very nice.

Lots of people had one of these as a starter DSLR...still a handy tool IMO.

Cheers

Rob

Fantastic camera - my first step into the world of DSLR and I'm still using it. In fact I picked up a second hand one off e-bay as a second body for sports shooting (couldn't spring for an upgrade and thought I'd stick with what I knew)

That's a good price as well - hope you've snatched his had off.

I moved up from a point & shoot to a 350D a few years ago and can say that its an excellent DSLR to start off with.
A word of warning though, you'll soon be in danger of upgraditis! ;)

Seriously though, the price seems very good - the sort of money that a mid range P&S would cost new.

If you find after a while that DSLR's aren't for you, then you could sell it on for a similar price (maybe even make a few quid on it).

My first digi SLR was a 350D and I still have it, great when I want a light camera rather than lug the 7D about, or in dodgy environments.

This was shot on my 350D

Just got in from work!!Thanks for your replies, all of you.Think I'd better get it,and perhaps get the 50mm 1.8 lens which I believe is good? I'll look at your photos tomorrow.Knocks me out that you're all so helpful.Wasn't expecting such a response.Any other comments very welcome. Thanks!

Instead of getting the 50mm, maybe you should look a getting something a bit longer - the kit lens should be more than sufficient for starting out.
At least then you would be able to cover all the way from 18mm thru to 200-300mm (ignoring the crop factor).

Thanks,Gary.You mean more zoom?
By the way, I will be using A/F most of the time as I'm not competent enough to do manual settings.I need to learn a bit.

Can one get battery grips for the 350D?
I.ve had a look at some of the links you provided and there's some great photos.Particularly like the plane ones and landscapes.Wondering if the plane shots have been done using A/F.

Thanks,Andy. Perhaps I'll find one on here.

I've never had any trouble with battery life on the 350D. Maybe see how you go before spending the extra on a grip?

Good point!I'll be getting one soon. £150 plus postage.Seems good.

The grip does help with handling, as the body really is very small.
I hate grips, but found on the 350D it's almost a must.

Bloody good price btw

The XT/350D was my first Canon DSLR. I purchased it about 1 year ago as a display model. Only the camera was out of the box and it had a few small scratches to show for the handling. Everything else was still in the box still wrapped in plastic. For $180.00 U.S. it was a bargain as I soon found out. 4 days later I bought the Tamron 18-200 lens for it and used it for informal shoots until this June when I acquired the T2i. My wife shoots with the XT and the T2i kit lens (18-55m
m IS). This lens is underrated since it is inexpensive and supplied in the kit.

Here's a pix taken with the XT and T2i kit lens.

I like the photo, John, and thanks for the info. I'm hoping I'll be able to get that effect of out of focus background, but unless the camera will do it automatically I won't have a clue.:)

That's 'depth of field' and you'll learn about it - read stuff and ask questions here. (I'd explain it but I'm a complete beginner too and others could explain it better!)

how important is live view to a beginner?I don't think the 350D has it...so what you see through the viewfinder is basically it.:):help:

Well I have it and to my shame have never used it, so personally speaking don't think its important at all

hi al have had my 350d about 6 years cost best part of £700 then with 18-55 non is lens check out my gallery photos all taken with the 350d. it is small and light but this means there's no problem carrying it about

I thought that a beginner would benefit from seeing the live view : if for example you've messed about with depth of field to create a blurred background, wouldn't live view show the picture as you've set it?
Forgive my ignorance and thanks for replies. As you can see, I'm very muddled.
