Does anyone know how to get high speed flash from the Sigma EF500, it says it will but when i put it in FP mode I can still only get up to 200 shutter in AV, TV or Manual mode.

Anyone tried this? or perhaps has this combination and could try it to see if its something i'm doing wrong.

Thanks

Allan

i dont think the shutter speed on the camera changes allan... i think its the speed of the flash i think it fires lots at a very fast speed.

Dunno about the canon but on my metz you have to select HSS as a sub-option of the ttl or A modes. It also only works when the flash is at 90 degrees. Anyother angle and it returns back to the normal max flash sync speed.

I dunno how it works with the Sigma but the 580 EX has a Hi Speed Sync Mode which you need to select. Once selected you get the warning 'Hi' at the bottom of the viewfinder.

You can select any shutter speed right up to the max speed of the shutter- 1/8000th in my case. It's not true flash sync. The normal max flash sync speed of your camera is the fastest shutter speed at which the shutter is fully open before the flash fires. Beyond that speed the two shutter curtains move together across the sensor leaving a slit between them - the faster the shutter speed, the narrower the slit, so the image is exposed incrementally. In normal circumstances the flash would just expose a segment of the image depending on where the travelling slit was when it fired.

With high speed flash the flash fires a continuous pulse of flashes throughout the exposure so that despite the moving slit, the whole subject is lit by the flash.

it prob because the high speed sync turns off when a shutter speed of 250 or lower is selected, try it with the camera in manual set it to 1/500th or something and put FP on and it should work. If you want to use it in AV or so on make sure that the shutter speed always appears higher than 1/250th or FP will switch off. HTH
