Yes
No I have a 30D, fabulous camera, can't really fault it. Great AF, great 5fps and great quality.

However...shortcomings are small screen, outdated menu and no HD/live view.

so, even though I plan on sticking with it for a good few months, I am certainly think about upgrading. Now, no way can I afford the *just* £1000 for the jaw dropping 7D, so got me thinking about the 500D. Yes I know its entry level! But it does have the mod cons that I like!

As far as I know, the only areas I'd be missing out on would be the 5fps(becomes 3.5) and build(not the semi pro quality).

Everything else would be better, same AF system, wider ISO, HD etc

Am I bonkers or is there a bit of sense buried in the waffling?

Why not the 50D ??

Why not the 50D ??

because of the cost and odd as it may seem, I really would like to try video with my lenses. But I get so far that its not a good idea! :d

The noise control probably wouldn't be as good on the 500D - this is definitely something you need to consider if you do a lot of low light work!

It's all well and good if the camera's ISO rating goes to 3200 (or whatever the 500D can do), but if it looks awful it's pointless having!

I've only ever had 1 good shot out of my 400D @ ISO 1600 (the highest it goes to)

I really like my 500D But then it is my first DSLR. The ISO goes to 12800 btw

I see, I'm not sure about noise. I'm fairly happy with mine at 3200, needs a bit of editing but it'll do. Also, if I ever didi get a 500D, I'd get the grip as well, something I'm loving on my 30D :D

Video is something Im getting to grips with, its bloody amazing!!!

I bet, on your 7D! Manual exposure and all *envious sigh*

One thing I want to find out off 500D owners that I have not been able to ascertain in camera shops, is it possible to AF in live view the normal way using the shutter button as you can on the 7D, or is the daft awkward exposure button on the side?

:)

Its actually very good and in my opinion considerably better than the 20D I had

Technology isn't everything, but the high ISO aspect has definitely been improved on the more modern cameras
In fact one of the best according to tests is the Pentax K-x which doesn't cost a fortune and the 500D isn't far behind

Fantastic screen too and you would notice the difference in that

no, its an awkward and very slow button on the back

I say go for it, i'm happy with shots at iso1600 from my 450D and would like 3200 as another option. The video feature would be really cool as well :)

well I've definitely got something to think about. I'm tempted to hold on till this summer, when presumably we'll be getting the upgrade, in which this will shoot down...or the upgrade will b soooo good....hmmmm
