Hi guys,

I'm thinking of buying a 30D which I know will be up for sale shortly.

My questions to you are, do you enjoy using the 30D?

Would there be anything you'd change?

Should you have bought something else (body-wise not lens-wise)?

Finally, any pictures, or anything else you can tell me would be great. :D

Cheers!

Dan

I've got one - bloody love it!

This time last year I was looking at getting a 400D until someone in a camera shop suggested I try a second hand 30D instead.
The weight and feel of the thing alone impressed me - it feels much chunkier and more solid than the 400 series and fits much better in my large hands.
The jog wheel is also a much nicer way of changing settings than the up/down buttons on the 400

No regrets about buying it at all. I'd like a 40D or a 50D, but for the price I got the 30D for I'm more than happy. That said, I'd like a 5Dmk2, but that's not going to happen :)

As for photos, try my flickr link below. The earliest shots are with the standard 18-55 kit lens, then about 6 months later I changed that to a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8

I think you would do well to get a 30D provided it hasn't been hammered. I had the 20D and they are great cameras...the difference being 4-5 very minor cosmetic upgrades...most important of which I would rate the bigger LCD screen at 2.5" on the 30 vs 1.8" on the 20.

Image quality is good, noise handling is very reasonable up to ISO 800 and not terrible at 1600 but might require careful PP

Use the saving on the 30D body to buy great glass and other goodies and you will be well away.

Oh, and the 30 was the first in that series of cameras to have spot metering...very handy

Cheers guys, much appriciated. :D

Some great photos there too wheetobix.

Everyone seems to love the 30D, I think I may too! :D

Hi I bought a 30D as a first move into digital after 50 years of 35mm. I have had it about a year now and can't see why I should swop it for anything else.
As fashion rules many camera sales it means that there are lots of 30d's around that have seen very little use and are reasonably cheap as owners move on to the latest and fastest whatever.
Get it and love it.

I'm looking, but got to sell my current 300D first which is becoming a challenge! lol

£300 mark should see me a good one I reckon. And an extra £50-60 will be a nifty :D

I was looking at the 20D but they all seem to be knakered now, like the people who bought the 30D new didn't mind spending that little extra and have looked after them better.

I like them so much i bought the company............well 3 of them anyway :D

had nothing but problems with the one i owned, kept locking up frequently had to remove the grip and replace it several times during one outing, the 40d is better if you can get one,

I have one. Bought new a couple of years ago. My previous camera was an EOS 600 film camera. I tried a 350d before I bought the 30d. The 30d felt "right". If the 350d had felt "right" I would have bought that but it felt too small. If I recall, the innards of the 20d are the same as the 30d but as already mentioned the screen is a bit bigger and it has spot metering. I am more than content with my 30d. Of course, I would have a 50d if I could justify the upgrade but I can't. To my eyes the images from the 30d are fine and in truth, the camera is far more capable than I am.

Got my 30D used from a wedding tog friend in Jan as my firstl DSLR. I love it, I've used my parent's 350D and for me the 30D was definitely the right choice. Jog wheel is so much better than the buttons on the 350 and feels like the whole body will last for years, whereas their 350D is looking pretty the worse for wear now.

Maybe I would like Live View for manual focus, but certainly not worth it for the premium to step up to a 40D/50D in my eyes.

I've had a 3OD for about 3 years with no problems whatsoever and I love it :) I still use it regularly even though I bought the 50D to keep it company.

HTH

I recently moved to a 30D from a 10D. It's an excellent camera, you will not be disappointed.

I paid about £320 for mine with canon battery grip, AA battery adapter and a couple of batteries. It is in mintier than mint condition.

At the moment they are a fantastic secondhand buy.

I moved to the 30D from the 350D... a big improvement in many respects.

However, depending on what you are planning on doing, the 30D has been eclipsed by newer technology - most obviously the 40D and now the 50D...

When I bought my 30D the 40D came out a few weeks later... I really should have got the 40D...

But that was ages ago now, I've switched to Nikon since then :D

lol, some great comments, thanks very much everyone! :)

My skills aren't so great that I think I'd grow out of a 30D anytime soon tbh, although this 300D hasn't lasted long!

I'd love the 40D but I can't justify the extra cash tbh, I'd much rather spend it going towards a tripod, a few filters, battery grip, and maybe the nifty. Or, just some half decent glass. :p

I've played with a mates 20D and that just felt 'right'. I never really noticed how awkward it is to take shots whilst balancing a camera (when using the 300D that it is). The 20D was just lovely, I felt secure with it, like I wouldn't drop it.

I think I've decided now, a 30D it is! :D

Now to find someone who wants a 300D! Then to someone who is selling a 30D! :D

I went straight to the 30D and, like desantnik, wished I had waited a month or so for the 40D.

Don't get me wrong it's a great camera but for motorsports, you need to take a lot of shots to get good ones.

The focussing is just not good enough for the supposed 5fps.

I got a 30D after much thought... and personal recommendation by an internet 'friend'. I had played with a 40D but I actually prefer the feel of my 30D.

Remember that a few years (2? 3?) ago the 30D was a top notch camera so with some great glass you can still capture fantastic pictures.

Whats the price difference between a second hand tidy 30D and a 40D now? Can't be that much can it?

I moved from a 300D to a 30D a few years back and love the little beast. I dropped it whilst in london last week from about waist height and it bounced and still works with just a few scratches. The 300D would have shattered ;) Add a battery grip to it and it's huge and well constructed :)

OK, it's my second comment but I love the 30D even more than my 50D  Sorry but I just do :D .......Just buy it for ****s sake :)

I started off with the 350D and it really has had its use! (I'm selling)

I was set on getting an upgrade to the 30D, then I got told to try out the 50D and I figured out why!

I think I'd regret getting the 30D now thinking about it. Although I got the 50D in Jan before the prices went up so I'd be struggling to pay for the cost of it now..

The 40D is an extremely ugly camera! The 20/30D has such sleek and sexy lines and these are lost in the ungainly boxy shape of the 40D...

also have heard about quite a few 40D bodies that packed up very suddenly and completely while very new...

Bottom line...the 40D is an ugly, boxy ungainly lump of camera...IMHO:coat:

I hardly noticed a difference going from 20D to 40D in the looks. The handling is IMO slightly improved on the 40D too.

Agree about the legoland menu system the 40D has - not as easy to navigate - however since you have 3 custom settings they account for the majority of my camera use so I rarely have to use the menu :)

Oops forgot to update this thread! I'm now waiting for a nifty fifty and a CF card to arrive - the 30D delivery was missed this morning!

Can't wait to get my hands on it! :D

Well, after having a play with my new toy I can honestly say that this camera is superb. It feels lovely. Even with the lightweight nifty on it feels secure and balanced. It's much more ergonomic than the 300D, and the bigger screen is VERY welcome indeed.

The nifty fifty is also turning out to be a great lens, it's certainly outclassing lenses I've tried that have a RRP of >£200. When people say the construction is poor they aren't joking though! It really is a low cost lens, but the IQ is really just superb for the cost. I couldn't have asked for more!

So thanks guys, I can see this camera being with me for a long time. Thanks for all the comments. :)
