Canon 30d and Canon 40d

Hi all,
At the moment i have a canon 350d but i want to upgrade it. I am looking at the Canon 30D or the Canon 40D, is there much difference image wise in the extra 2.6 mp and what are your views on both models.
 
The 40D has a few more additional features and upgrades the 30D doesnt have

Better image processor it uses a DIGIC III the 30D has a II

Auto dust cleaning of the sensor on the 40D

Live view on the display like the point and shoot compact cameras

I went from a 20D to the 40D as when i upgraded the difference between the 20 and 30D wasn't enough to justify a change but going up to the 40D was. I'd say go for the 40D it has newer technology and added features the 30D doesn't and is a good camera from my experience of using it.
 
I'd agree with the above, I went from a 350D to a 30D (as the 40D hadn't been released).
Either model is a massive improvement on the 350D but today I'd definitely go for the 40D, not necessarily for the difference in image quality between them (which I think is negligible) but the better processor and the live view (great for those awkward angles).....

Thanks Paul i was wondering wether the extra £100-£150 was worth it for the 40D but now you have pointed out the benefits especially the image processor i think it probably is.
 
I went from a 400d to a 40d and it's a great upgrade, the only thing that disappoints me is the screen on the 40d, it's a good size but doesn't have enough pixels and makes it hard to review the sharpness/focus of shots without zooming in and then it's still not ideal. Other benefit of a 50d is more pixels if you're cropping heavily. just a thought..

I have the 30D and I've used the 40D. It's more recent - although both are ageing now - and has some improvements, so I'd go for it if you have the money. OTOH, there's nothing wrong with the 30D and the 2.6 Mp difference really doesn't matter at all. I've printed to A4 and larger from a 1200 x 1600 (2Mp) file from my old Dimage 7i and got good results.
 
Thanks for all replies. After reading the link that Dave mentioned coupled with the fact that i would need to save for the 40D i think i will go for the 30D for now as someone said that both are a big improvement on the 350D and get the 40D later or even wait a bit longer and go for the 50D :thumbs:

Thats good to know the 350D has been a good start up camera for me but now i want to improve things and with a tight budget its nice to get some good advice on the affordable upgrades :)
 
i moved from a 14mp sony a390 to an 8mp canon 30d a few months ago, i thought i would miss the extra resolution but i don't. the extra size and functionality of the 30d is great and the robustness of the magnesium body means that it feels solid in the hand, the 40d will no doubt be almost identical in these respects.

i plumped for the 30d rather than the 40d because i was starting to build a new system and money was a big consideration at the time, but i'm happy with my choice although i do sometimes think i'd love a 7d or a 5d. but neither will make me a better photographer, they will however leave me with a £1000+ debt which i don't want or need.

i actually held a 350d at the weekend for the first time on saturday when my uncle pulled his old camera gear from the attic. i was surprised by how small it was compared to my 30d, and with my sigma 24-70 2.8 attached it looked ridiculous. the 30d balances out far better with larger lenses, especially with a grip(which mine came with and i'd highly recommend).

for less than £650 i've gotten myself a 30d with canon grip, sigma 24-70 2.8 and a canon 50 1.8 so i'm well on my way to building my budget kit. the 30d will see me right for some time yet and by when i upgrade to my next body it'll make a fine back-up camera for me.

i think you can guess already, but i would would buy the 30d and use the extra money you would have had to spend to get the 40d to put towards new glass.

btw all my recent flickr and facebook pics have been taken with a 30d and sigma 24-70 2.8 if you want to take a look

Glad you're getting on well with the 30D! I bought mine after it was discontinued, with the 17-85mm kit lens, because I didn't like the XXXD bodies and couldn't afford a Nikon D200. The package cost slightly less than half what a D200 body was going for in South Africa at the time.

the money you can pick up a used 30/40d for now is great news for people buying on the used market now. both might be getting on a bit now but for the most people they will be more than up to the job they need them for, and tough enough take most of the abuse thrown at it. i almost bought a 60d but i'm glad i decided to go for the 30d instead and got better lenses to go with it rather than the 60d with the kit lens.

i'd recommend the 30d in a heartbeat :thumbs:

Thanks for the reply Kieth. I am definately going for the 30D and if i am as happy with it as you are i will stick with it and as you say use future funds to buy better glass. Had a look at your Flickr and you have some nice images. :)

I had both before, and 40D was miles better. 40D has less noise and the sensor didn't have to be cleaned everyday. Extra resolution is a bonus, but 8mp can still produce decent prints. Good glass is more important though.

Ha! Shows how we all see things differently! I found the 40D noisier (and DXOMark backs this up). Both are still very capable cameras, either way :)
