Hi,

I am just trying to finalize on which lens i should get, or more importantly which one is the better, im leaning more towards the 300mm f4 L IS USM but would like to hear other peoples opinions on this. It will be mainly used for sports, and heard that the sigma is not very fast at focusing which is a major thing for me,

any feed back will be much appreciated

cheers jay

It is very clear that the 300L will be much better at 300mm. However, it is also useless at 150mm, or at 500mm...

I would have thought the obvious choice would be the 100-400L? It can almost keep up with the 300L for sharpness, has fast focusing, IS, and obviously has the versatility of the zoom.

Not used the Sigma unfortunately, but can definately recomend the 300F4 IS lens, fantastic quality lens, It's also made me alter (for the better I think) the way I take a photo.

I personally don't think you are considering a like for like comparison. Can you compare a telephoto zoom with a long prime? In IQ the prime will win hands down, but as HoppyUK says, it can not do 150-300 like the Sigma can.

What is most important to you? Picture quality or being able to use different focal lengths? There will of course be times when you need 150mm, in that case if you have the prime you will lose the shot. Do you have anything else in your bag, such as 70-200 that you can use to plug this gap?

1.4 on the 300 will give you 420mm. The thing you need to consider is wether you want the flexibility of a zoom of the sharpness of a prime (maybe less with a TC,I don`t know the Canon lens so can`t say for sure)

The Sigma 120-400 (which is very similar to the 150-500) is a bit sharper than what my 300L IS was at 420mm with an 1.4TC

BUT what should matter most is:
1. Do you need a zoom or is a prime adequate?
2. Is f4 required?
3. Cost for the 300mm+1.4TC (if needed) will be much higher than the 150-500
4. The Canon should be easier to sell and will hold it's value better in a few years

For sheer IQ a prime is always going to be better, that said modern zooms are pretty darn good, it depends how much of a pixel peeper you are :D You will of course lose the flexibilty of the zoom. I can recommend the Sigma 150-500, I've had mine nearly a year and it is a great lens every bit a match for the canon 100-400 and cheaper, and with a better IS system, 4 stops. If I had to replace it, and even if money was not an issue, it would be the first zoom I would buy.
