Hi Guys

There's a very well used Canon 300mm f2.8 lens at MBP, looks very tatty, but will it do the job?

Thanks

If the glass is clean then there's no reason why not....

Be aware that servicing on the Non IS 300 2.8 is a real struggle to service now. I owned one and wanted to get it serviced, CPN told me they couldnt. That was too concerning to me, so i sold it.

The one on MPB is a mess, i might consider it for a remote camera or a rallying lens, something where a decent lens is likely to get abused.

Thanks guys, I think I'll save a bit more before parting with my hard earned...

I am a lazy git and still ahvent sent mine to canon for the once over before selling... mines like new and will be around 2.7k :)

I was in Elstree (Canon RCC) the other day and they said that they keep spares for a long long time after a lens is discontinued - something like 10 years and then when it gets to the 10th year they stockpile spares so they can continue to service long after this date.

Check with them, but I'm 99% sure they'll still service the 300 2.8 - I think a chap in there had one serviced very recently - he chipped in to the conversation as I was asking about spares availability for old lenses in general.

I had an 8yr old lens that was discontinued 12 months after buying. When I sent it in to Canon for repair it came back spares nolonger available.

That sounds very odd - they were quite definite about a policy of keeping spares for many years. While I was there picking up some stuff a chap bought in the older 16-35. I know it's not that old yet but they definitely said it would be repairable as they keep all the spares for it.

trust me if i had £1300 to hand..That lens would no longer be for sale :/

I picked up a battered old 300/2.8 from gumtree. Seller was a paparazzo who just bunged it in the back of his car (along with his dog) when we wasn't using it. But he was careful with the glass and the shots are fine. If you have the 6mth guarantee with MBP I'd say give it a go. Test it out thoroughly quickly and then look after it.

or for peace of mind you can buy an immaculate one for not a great deal more money that's currently for sale on here, knowing it's not been bumped, knocked or dropped!! ;)

I bought a S/H non IS off ebay. Seller claimed it had been to Canon for service and clean prior to listing and condition was imaculate. I thought £1200 was a very good price which I was happy to pay.
