Canon 300mm 2.8 Lens strap

Do these exist or is it the case of getting a normal camera strap and putting it on the lens?

Any Recommendations?

Well they definitely exist - my 300mm 2.8L came with one supplied, but whether you'd be able to source one is another matter. Tbh though, it just looks like the same camera strap fitted to virtually every Canon body, in fact I suspect it is, so any Canon camera strap should do the job.

Alternatively, get an Optech strap which considerably alleviates the weight.

The are called wide lens strap. They retail for about £30 + postage. I was after one for my 500. I think kerso may be able to get one for you if I remember correctly.
 
Park Cameras do a bunch of Canon camera & lens straps. I just put a normal Canon camera strap on mine when I had it.
 
The normal Canon straps are too short. The one that came with my 300 f2.8 is about 25 cm longer - presumably because the lens attachment points are further away than thos on the camera. Op/tech straps are also too short - even with the 'so-called' longer attachments.

A BlackRapid attached to the tripod foot is OK, once you get used to the lens hanging horizontally, not vertically.
 
Just out of interest why do you want to use a strap?

I find it easier to carry the lens using the tripod foot but then I'm not a strap fan and don't use one on my 1D either.

I agree with Neil, two straps are a nuisance, I carry mine by the foot...

You don't need 2 straps, you remove the camera strap and.connect a black rapid style strap to the lens collar, or connect it to the tripod thread on the camera body and let the lens hang off the body. I connect to the body with the 70-200, not sure if the 300 would be getting a bit heavy for this though.

Added advantage of this style of strap is it has a quick release at a single attachment point so you can remove the strap quickly when you want it off. Also you can shoot with it slung over your shoulder because the attachment slides up the strap, its such a good system I could never go back to the original straps that attach to the top of the body at 2 points.
 
I use the orignal one supplied but I agree it is a little short and uncomfortable.
An Optech sling strap is one you could consider.
I do have one and have been very pleased with it.

By 'original one' do you mean the one supplied with the 300 f2.8 (which is very, very long) or the one supplied with the camera (which isn't long at all)?
 
I wonder how many respondants to this thread have actually seen a 300 f2.8, let alone owned one. Here is a selection of straps, from top to bottom -

BlackRapid RS-7
Canon strap supplied with 300 f2.8 (with lens attached)
Op/tech ProLoop with swivel-hook fittings.
Canon strap supplied with 50D

It should be obvious that the strap from the 50D is going to be far too short to use as a shoulder strap, unless you like having the camera body stuck in your armpit!

looking at the replies most of the respondants claim to own one, I wonder if they made two lengths? mine is at the longest I dare extend it and it measures 70cm from the centre of the lens cap, so in total about 140-150cm

to answer the op yes they do make them and they wre supplied with the lens

Well I'm not sure anyone suggested using the camera strap did they? I suggested a black rapid and said I use it in the camera body with a 70-200 but with a 300 2.8 you might not want to do that and use the tripod collar. And as difficult as you might find it to believe I have actually seen one, and I've heard there are even other people who actually own one. I know difficult to believe ;)


Oops I stand corrected there was a comment that you could use a camera strap, surely that would work attached somehow to the tripod collar although not very practical.

LOL. Fair does then - the camera straps are shorter. I have the pucka straps on my 300mm f/2.8 and the 500mm f/4/ I'm not sure why - they're usually in the way more than anything - I invariably carry the camera and lens by the tripod foot anyway.

I didn't have a strap with mine as I bought it second-hand from the classifieds.

The reason I want one is I've only got one body at the moment so it's easier to have the 300 2.8 on a strap while I need to shoot and use other lenses on my body which is connected to the RS7.

I've found and ordered the Canon wide strap.
