I find it easier to carry the lens using the tripod foot but then I'm not a strap fan and don't use one on my 1D either.

I use the orignal one supplied but I agree it is a little short and uncomfortable.

Canon strap supplied with 50D
It should be obvious that the strap from the 50D is going to be far too short to use as a shoulder strap, unless you like having the camera body stuck in your armpit!
