Hi Guys,
Bought a cheap 300D on a bit of a whim a few months back so that I could make use of some old canon lenses I had access to. I am finding myself enjoying this photography lark more and more, yet the more I learn, the more I have a feeling that the old girl could be holding me back a little so am considering upgrading to a used 40D.

Can anyone confirm whether or not I am likely to get much more out of a 40D compared to a 300D? I like the Idea of the larger screen, and not waiting for what can feel like an eternity for it to turn on would be nice, however one of the main things I would be hoping for is an improvement at higher ISO settings (ISO400 seems about the limit on the 300D).

Is it a worthwhile upgrade?

i got 40d amongst other cameras and still use the 40d quiet a lot loved this camera. think its 10meg pixel but always got good quality photo,s out of it is a good all round camera, ill send u a pic if u like that i have taken on 40d,

Better auto-focus, better built, better handling (if you like a heavier, bigger body), the screen is ok (not anything near the screens of today), better FPS, faster processing, I find ISO good up to 800 or even higher if you get you exposure bang on. You can get a good bargin on them at the minute.... oh and no lag time on start up. I went from a 450D to a 40D and noticed the difference not so much in IQ but just all round perfomance, I luv the way the XXD feel in your hand.

If I am being honest, for the price now I would probably buy a 50D if your going from a XXXD you will spend about £100 more overall but you get a fantasic screen and micro focus adjustment, just an idea.

I went from a 300d to a 40d at the beginning of last year. It's a big jump in the abilities of the camera. It is also quite a lot bigger and heavier, which for me wasn't a bad thing. Mind you the 300d can still produce superb photos!

Cool, thanks for the response guys. Thanks Ian, I was hoping that no-one would mention the 50D! I must admit, it had crossed my mind several times but am trying to keep the budget tight!:(

:D Opps sorry, there is no difference in IQ between the 40D and 50D, if anything some people say the 40D will perfom better at high ISO than the 50D. It all depends how much use you will get out of micro adjustment and a better screen, the 40D's screen isn't bad, it does what its supposed to do. Keep your eye on the forum for a bargin.

A 40d is a very worthwhile upgrade.
If you are into macro or pixel peeping then the extra £100 or so for micro adjust on the 50d is really worthwhile too

I also went from a 300D to the 40D and would agree with this. I've still got my 300D - my daughter uses it and it still produces very good shots.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with a 40D

I went from a 300D to a 20D and the difference was impressive. As well as all the other advantages of the 40D mentioned above, the handling is better IMO, with the wheel on the rear for one thing.

I have a 350D and pick up my 40D tomorrow - purchased on here! Cant wait!!!!

40D >> 300D

50D is roughly similar to 40D, a bit worse IQ and not important extra features if anything. It is a bit like a dog with an extra fifth leg.
