Canon 2x extender MkIII

My 2xMKIII arrived this morning from Panamoz and was eager to test out on something random in the garden.

I had the MKII 1.4 & 2 but never was that impressed to be honest. The 1.4 MKII was good but the 2 x per everyone else's observations.

2x MKIII attached to a 300mm 2.8L MKII and shot handheld on a monopod (bit 'Shakin Stevens') but had the IS on 1.

Here is an example (RAW & JPG) SOO the 1DX using centre focus on the body of the object.

I am super chuffed with the IQ and rendering which is now taken my range nicely up to 600mm!

Have a look...Download tab at top

Am sure it can be taken better etc

Glad you're pleased, but doesn't surprise me one bit!

Mk2 lenses and mk 3 extenders are for me an excellent upgrade, but still very pricy!!

One of the problems, Joe, is that I suspect the 1 Dx has the best af by a long way on present Canon bodies, I've certainly got more keepers with it than any previous Canon body, and with the mk2 lenses and mk3 converters it's JUST stellar.
The 5D3 is excellent, but not quite up to the performance of the 1 Dx, but I suspect the OP would still get great results with the 2x converter...but the mk 3 would be better than the mk2 I think.

I don't see any reason why the AF on the 5D3 would perform any differently to the 1DX in one-shot mode. When it comes to AI Servo then yes, the 1DX has advantages in processing power and metering which allows it to better track subjects but for simple one-shot focusing, the two should be pretty much identical.

As for the OP's question, I have the 70-200 mk2 and have tried it with a 2x mk3 and it is very good indeed. Whilst there's not much between the mk2 and mk3 versions of the 1.4x, this isn't the case for the 2x and the mk3 is quite an improvement. The 70-200 mk2 is known to work extremely well with the mk3 converters.

Sorry, I wasn't referring to one shot mode, to be honest, I never use it, don't find any problem with a static subject in AI servo with the 1Dx, hence my comments, but I'm sure you are right.

Again, I'm agreeing with your second point, but I never used the mk 2 converters on the mk 2 70-200, certainly yesterday shooting puffins, the combo with the mk 3 1.4 showed no appreciable drop either in af or quality.
