Canon 2x convertor

Just a reminder...
You need f2.8 glass to retain auto-focus on the 40D.
Taping pins didn't work for me.
Which is why my 2x Extender sits in my cupboard unused.
The 1.4x is a much better bet

Cheers, didn't know that. I've only got two lenses that are f2.8 or wider, & in honesty would probably only use it on my 70-200 f2.8, but with what you've said above in mind, perhaps I should only get (if it comes up at th eright price) a 1.4x so it's more flexible.

Ah - OK - than I should also add that the teleconverters are not compatible with all lenses.
I'm sure Google will be able to tell you which lenses will work with which converters.

Plus find a store that has some in stock None round by me Ive just checked.

Same here. The big stores seem to do this - advertise something at a very good price but not have any stock.

Bear in mind also that it is the II and there is now an III.

This is indeed true, they are only compatible with lenses that have the recess at the coupling end, like the 70-200.

What is the main difference?

The mk3 is faster on focussing, better handles IQ transfer from the lens to the sensor etc. Everything you would expect from an upgrade really :)
