Yes
As title, what are your opinions on it. I need a pretty sharp lens and the range seems good. Aperture isn't a problem for me as i work in bright daylight,

how does it compare to the 18-55mm IS?

thanks

Mark

My wife uses one as here walkabout lens and I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised by the quality once you move away from the very extremeties of the zoom range. It's not L build and doesn't compare with any L's I have at equivalent FL settings but it does a reasonable job.

It was heavily produced as a kit lens with some bodies and this factor probably leads to larger copy variations than other lenses...I'm not saying that the one I have is ultra-sharp but I can't equate it to some reports I see where it is slated as being pathetically soft.

It fits a niche at around one third of the price of the nearest L equivalent.

Thanks Bob, Any other comments from people

I was in Oxford with my friend over ther weekend and he had this lens on all day, he is really impressed with it. got some good shots with is as well, i only had my 16-35 on so it was a good little combo what i could not get he could and i got some really nice wide shots that he could not.
I would say its a cracking lens go for it

Photozone seem to like it, not stellar but nothing bad to say either. My only concern would be that as a walk about on a crop sesnor SLR it's not very wide which I would find a bit of a limitation allthough you may not mind.

This was my first walkaround lens and even on a crop makes a great walkaround to boot. The lens is sharp enough and the IS helps you out every now and again too.

I really did not mind the fact its not wide enough for all occassions but tbh the amount of times I missed not having a wider lens was only a few.

I've tried out this lens and like it but it's not wide enough for me.
I went for it's 17-85 IS sibling. then traded that for 17-50 2.8 tamron as I couldn't justify the 17-55 canon IS price tag for myself at the time

I haveused one for the past 2 years as a walk round general purpose lens, and have found it to be quite good, But I don't shoot many wide shots.
