Canon 270 EX

Cute :D

I don't get out much :)

I really like that. I've always been jealous of the Nikon SB-400 flashgun - having such a compact flash looks really handy (though I have no idea how it performs). And only £10 more than the 220EX. Bargain.

It would be just the job on the G9 its a bit top heavy with the 430:)

Yeah, my G9 falls over all the time if you try and stand it up wioth the flash on!

Yes, that does look nice indeed. I've always wanted a compact flash too. How much is RRp then?

Having never used one of these compact type flashes before how much better are they than the pop up flash built in on the Canon XXXD and XXD cameras?

It's guide number is 27m, and the popup flashes are ~13m, so it's a lot more powerful. And the zoom head means it'll be more efficient than the popup flash too.

Besides the increased power, the head also tilts up so you can bounce the light off a ceiling and get more diffused light.

On the negative side:
The head doesn't swivel so you don't have many options as to where you can bounce off - flashes with swivel heads(i.e. 430EX) give you more options - you can turn them to the side and bounce off a wall if the ceiling's too high or whatever

Also, there's no manual power control so it's kinda useless for multiple-flash strobist type stuff. That said, with a TTL cable it could be a very compact off-camera lighting solution, and you can adjust the power output in the camera menu.

Thanks for the response, I missed that the head tilts up. That would be very useful and is something I use quite a lot with my current flash.

I think for myself I would be best off with a 430EX or something similar so I can have a simple multi flash set up. :)

I just found this i dont know how much truth there is in it
Price for Europe
The Speedlite 270EX is available from early May 2009 priced at £149.99 (€169.99) RRP inc. VAT

That is the quote from the Canon press release.

sweet diddy little thing :D

but whats the point? how much higher than the pop up is it and how much more powerful, why not a proper flash gun for about 50 quid more ?

It does look nice and portable but not sure at £150 if it is worth it when you could pick up a 430ex for a similar price. I can understand a G9 or G10 owner wanting one of these though as the other flashes don't balance very nicely on them...

Gut feel, aimed at compact hotshoe equipped cameras or SLR folk who want a bit more ooomph for not a lot of cash.

just twigged it bounces, that would be lush on a g series, or cheaply on an slr (didn't see the point till i realized it bounced)
