Hi guys

I'm struggling to choose between these two lenses.

My current set up is Canon 1D3 with 17-40L and 135 f2. These are great lenses but I want something as a better walk around lens ideal for portraits and shots of the family indoors. The 135L is great for portraits but I always have to stand quite far back due to the focal length.

Also I like to shoot wide open so nice bokeh is important to me, which lens would you suggest out of the two?

Cheers

Phil

I had this choice a few months ago.

On a 1D3, same as yours, went with the 35L and have no regrets.

I have a few nice lenses including the 85L but I think this would be my favourite of all.

Lots will recommend the 24L though. To a large extent it, obviously, depends on your style. The 24L gets great "environmental" portraits.

Just my 2p worth.

Cheers for the input Gary. Can I ask if you have any samples of portraits with nice Bokeh shot with this combo. :)

How about buy both, choose your fave, then sell the other to me at bargain price?

Seriously though, I'd go for the wider. In the situations where you would have prefered a longer FL you always have the [sinful] crop option. You'll be annoyed if you just can't fit it in on a 35mm though :)

I'm currently at work so have very few images with me. Will post something later though if no-one else comes up with anything convincing.

This lens is a dream in the bokeh department though.

All the best with your choice.

A timely thread indeed, as I am trying to choose between these two as well. So far I'm also leaning towards the 35/1.4 even though it's an old war horse by now.

Are you looking for this to go on a full frame or 1.3X crop camera like mine?

I cant decide if i'll benefit from the extra wide of the 24?

I think it would work ok on all my cameras.. 7D, 5D and 1D.. but mainly for the 5D. And I could sell my Sigma 30/1.4 crop-only lens as well.

I'd plump for the 35mm. It's the lens that I use when casually photographing the children round the house. You can get in reasonably close without too much perspective distortion. The 24mm is perhaps stronger at environmental portraits where your subject is less dominant in the frame.

In fact I'll stick my neck out and state that if I could only have one focal length then it would be 35mm. I think it matches more closely what we see than 50mm (the 'standard' focal length).

But David I notice you shoot with a 5D.

If i were to choose the 35mm on my 1D3 it would be equivalent to 45mm whereas the 24mm on my camera would be 31mm which would be close to the field of view you get with the 35mm on a 5D.

As you'll be using the lenses on a 1D3 I would go with the 24mm over the 35mm as I would rather have a ~32mm FOV than ~45mm on a full frame camera.

I would definitely agree that for my tastes too 35mm on FF is great for environmental portraits. You don't mention if you're looking at the MkI or MkII version of the 24mm and I have no experience of actually shooting with either version of the 24mm but from the reviews I've read there's very little to choose between the 24L MkI and 35L with the 35mm just edging it whilst the MkII is an improvement over the earlier version.

I also went with the 35/1.4L, also from Kerso.. unbeatable price I have to say  Unfortunately being in Finland I have to wait a couple of days for it :'(

I'm sure you're gonna love it. I love mine it is very sharp wide open, though does have quite a bit of CA but i've read its a feature common with such fast wideangles.

I'm going to the Lakes next week so i'll be testing it thoroughly then and i'll be posting samples
