Hi All,

Which of these two would be the better walk about lens.

Thanks

Hi Saul,

I guess i'll depend if you prefer a longer focal length + IS or a larger aperture (2.8).
Are they both within your budget?

I have the Canon and love it, but I didn't ever try the Sigma.

On a 5D I'd choose the larger aperture lens every time over an f4 lens especially if there's a possibility of shooting in lower light unless you have a speedlight in your back pocket or like shooting at the very highest ISO's.

Don't think the sigma is a constant 2.8 though, if it was then yeah, but most of them seem to go to 4.0 at the long end.

Depends how and where you shoot. Indoors, low light and for portrature f/2.8 is a big advantage. However, as an outdoor walakabout lens the 24-105 is hard to beat. The Sigma is not supposed to be the sharpest of lenses, but should be good enough for anyone not pixel-peeping at 1:1.

Another alternative is the Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 VC. This is more expensive (£650 at OneStop Digital), but is the closest lens optically to Canon's 24-70L II, and adds extrememly good IS (VC) to the mix. I think the Tamron's extra £100 or so over the Sigma is well worth paying. It is quite a bit sharper, vignettes less and has VC. That's why I purchased one, and I prefer it to my 24-105 (although the Canon is still agreat lens).

I found the Tamron after I had posted this, indeed it does look a better deal than the Sigma. Seeing you have both the Canon & Tamron, would you give up the Canon over the Tamron?

I posted this mini review a few days ago regarding my impressions of the Tamron vs Canon. Both are very good lenses, but if I had to choose one it definately be the Tamron. The Tamron has that extra stop advantage and is sharper than the Canon at equivelent apertures. It's VC is as good as Canon's IS (the Tamron is also quieter), but the Canon does seem to focus slightly faster and has the extra 35mm. Both are weather sealed and the build and size/weight are also pretty equal.

For me the Tamron is the more usable and better lens, but many people cannot see past the fact it is not a Canon L. Coming from F/2.8 on a 7D, I felt thet the "kit 24-105 lens" was holding my 6D back. The 24-70 F/2.8 just feels right and fits my needs better. It offers >95% of Canon 24-70L II IQ with >100% of it's features (IS is not offered on the Canon) for half of the price. The Tamron is a winner.

Thanks Orville, your mini review was good. I have just seen there is a huge Calumet store not too far from me, that's the weekend sorted!!
